Congratulations! Enjoy the opened up bands. I should study for extra some time soon.

Local club guys want me to be a VE so I may do that next View Quote Second...get your VE...it can be very rewarding being on the other side of the table. I've enjoyed instructing, coaching, and then on exam day getting to sign a ticket for someone |

Congrats! Welcome to the darkest side of this hobby. The best benefit of Extra is access to the DX portions of 20 and 40 meter bands.
VE certification is very easy. I may have the ARRL Test answers written down somewhere if you need them. It's an open book test but several questions were somewhat confusing. Don't forget to get a special password for the "EXTRA ONLY" portion of this forum! |

Congratulations! Now you can access the band segments where the good stuff happens.
Incidentally, QRP can be surprisingly productive, even when operating SSB. Try 20 during the daytime and 40 & 75 in the late-night hours. |

When a multi band dipole antenna says it needs an antenna tuner, does that mean an antenna tuner that some radios come with it built in including automatic or a tuner at the antenna feed point?
|
|
Congrats, Surprising how good it feels to pass that darn test.. Have fun with the good DX..

Congrats, hope to work on mine here soon and get extra. I have 6 weeks off of work coming up to study(hopefully).....new member of the family may make it difficult.

View Quote Both options will work. Having a tuner at the antenna's feedpoint is a better, more efficient option but it may not be as easy and practical as the internal tuner option. Some power will be lost in the coax if you choose to use the radio's internal tuner. A resonant antenna that requires no antenna tuner is always a better choice. Tuners are for trimming SWR when it gets above 1.3(ish) to 1 and below about 3:1. They are not for tuning a lawn chair as an antenna. Just remember that being able to tune an antenna, does not mean it's working well. A dummy load has a perfect 1:1 SWR but hardly radiates anything. |

View Quote http://www.hamstudy.org it's free with a free account it tracks what answers you get right and what answers you get wrong and keeps presenting the ones you miss and random one you got right until you know them all. I did that for about 6 hrs and went and took the test and only got one wrong and it works from a cell phone. |

I assume you're another no-code extra ruining the hobby.
Congratulations (from another no-code extra ruining the hobby) |

I studied for Extra because I was too lazy to memorize the general band limits.
True story. |

OP, have you exercised you rights on an Extra portion of any band yet?
Sometimes a call with /AE brings good attention. |

I got my extra because the band would be dead at night except the extra portion so i said screw this.

Thanks
my radio showed up. I also bought a 20 m dipole to get on the air right away, and a balun so I can make an 80/40 dipole as my first home brew antenna. |

If you can, then propagation from the PNW to your location should be favorable. |

I was too busy talking on 20m, making a 40m dipole and realizing I don't have the real estate for an 80m straight wire dipole ( or inverted V ) with east / west propagation. So I may string an 80m full wave loop ( or there abouts ) tomorrow. I will only get it up about 25 feet though, unless I get my climbing tree stand out and skimper up to 35 feet to hang wire. Even then it will just be a cloud burner. |

Congrats. I am absolutely dumb founded to see this much activity on a ham radio forum that is a sub forum of AR15!
Im a 20wpm extra but I started out as a codeless tech, so I came in the easy way. I'm excited to see this much activity. I'll have to look around. 73 Gordon N7VY |

I bet many will agree with me. |
