At least, everywhere I know to look. HRO, DX Engineering, Gigaparts all are out of stock with like a month or more until they are expected to ship.
Are there any reputable, trustworthy online dealers that have these radios in stock right now at the going price of $659? |

With the sun cycle declining people may start dumping QRP radios. I'm waiting for a dirt cheap 817. Sub $400 range.

Are there any other radios around the same size/weight/price as the FT-817 from other manufacturers? I remember seeing the little xiegu radios a while back, but I guess they never really caught on. Whatever radio I end up with, I want it to be popular enough that LDG makes an auto tuner for it. |

I didn't, but I checked their site and they want $20 more than most other places. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I must agree Derek45.....unless you are a serious CW operator, get a 100 watt rig for portable use.
With the SFI (solar flux index) under 100, the FT-857 would be a better choice at 100 watts. Propagation is really going to suck on the high bands when the SFI gets around 65. |

View Quote I already have the 857D, I just want something with an internal battery, and designed to be more portable. If they hadn't discontinued the 897 I would have bought it over the 857 and had the best of both worlds, 100 watts and an internal battery. But it is pretty big compared to the 817 so you sacrifice some portability. I really wish Yaesu would come out with a replacement that runs 20 Watts, has an external meter port like the 857, and a bigger display, and the same DSP features as the FT-450D. The DSP in that radio is really simple to use, and it works well. You can set either notch or bandpass, and adjust the width, then scoot it up or down the passband as needed. It's not as nice as a waterfall and all that jazz but it can probably be made to work with a small LCD display and shouldn't take up much room inside the radio. |
|
Now that Icom brought out and SDR radio, maybe its time for Yaesu to do the same.
If they embrace SDR technology, there might be hope for something portable with in the near future. |

pretty sure Kenwood and Yaesu are tearing into 7300's right about now

I put a Portable Zero Sprint on my 857. Now I have an 857D with an "internal" battery. Works well.

I've seen Chinese chassis kits on Ebay that go for a lot more and don't look as nice. I am going to want to do something to mount an LDG Z-817 eventually. |

For anyone looking for one, this seems like a decent deal for the package. Not affiliated yada yadda.
817ND, LDG tuner, signalink, and buddipole for 650. https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/yaesu-ft-817nd-ldg-817-auto-tuner-signalink-usb-sound-card.520658/ |

I have an 817 non - Nd and that is actually tempting. Not affiliated either.

FWIW
I've been told there is a HUGE announcement expected from Elecraft at Hamvention....and I anticipate it to be in reference to Portable Ops....I know this isn't 817 news, but it may mean the KX3 may become hot on the Used mkt? YMMV |

Heck, if they'd take an 817 and add the waterproof and display from a VX-8 and maybe bump it to 10w-20w. That alone would be a perfect radio.

I have a feeling Yaesu will announce a replacement for the 817. I just hope they wouldn't stop shipping 817s to dealers who allow you to backorder items.
A brand new radio is likely to cost double what the 817 costs and that will price me out of it. |

View Quote I would like to see a port for an external S meter like they have on the 857. Plus an integral Bluetooth connection to allow you to use a cell phone for rig control, waterfall, etc would be really nice. |

Going to link this tidbit from the KX3 Yahoo group:
A Chinese made SDR radio in something like KX3 form factor. Thirty watts output, expected to launch this year at something near $500 retail. http://www.qrpblog.com/2016/04/esdr-new-portable-sdr-hf-transceiver.html?utm_source=amateur-radio-weekly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter Cheers... Harlikwin... View Quote Sorry, I don't have any info. I just saw that post on the Yahoo group and thought it would be of interest to some here. Perhaps they'll have an early unit at Dayton and one of the tribe will report back. Jim... |
