Has anyone here ever built one of these? They can be had for about 5 dollars on ebay. I tried to link them but couldn't get them to hyperlink.

I bought a couple on a whim with some extra Paypal money I had, but haven't had a chance to put it together yet. Thought it might be a simple tool for practicing CW with my brother in law on the other side of town.

You can get them assembled for about $6 packet delivery from china.

I have one and swapped to a 7.030 crystal, they come with 7.024 IIRC...weird.

I am puzzling over how to cheaply add a digital VFO to the unit, but my kit of choice for this is bigger than the little boxes I bought.  I need a 3D printer.

The QRP guys hang out in the 7.030 range IIRC.

I am not sure if it is exactly the same thing, but I built one of THESE a few years ago.
It is called the Pixie II.

The one you link to looks a little bit more sophisticated than the one I built

It's probably the same circuit only yours has stuff like connectors and IC sockets.

IIRC, one of the gus locally was trying to use them for CW practice and couldn't get them to work - but don't quote me on that.

I bought this one and it works like a charm.

This one pictured above looks a hellava lot nicer though. ''

If I was looking for something like this, I would be a lot more interested in that "transmitter" that is in this month's QST that goes on the GIPO pins of a Raspberry Pi.




What is the story with using these for code practice ?

I have the same one as Scout pictured above.

It includes a pot to adjust for a little bit of receive offset.

Honestly my HB-1A is all I need for CW, I am only messing with the pixie as a 'so cheap I don't care' project.

Like the cap stuck in the BNC connector in the photos.

Really though this is a dirt simple kit and the end result is a working CW transceiver. Doesn't take much imagination to start with this and expand on it. Add on a Farhan JBOT amp and you'll have 5w and a truly usable rig. Add on a VFO of your choice. Maybe another stage of audio amp to drive a speaker. Design and build your own PCB just because you can.

For $5 you can't go wrong. Let's build something.
