HF antenna is up, radio is setup. Tuner seems to be working and tuning around 1.5 SWR. Been scanning for about an hour and haven't found any conversation anywhere.

Yep, and it seems to be tuning. I'm kind of blindly spinning the dial. Wanted to hear some conversation to make sure everything is working before calling CQ. |

Give me a frequency, I'll see what I can do.

Ah. Well, 20m might work for NV-UT at the moment, but 40m is much more likely. Hang on....

No sir, haven't heard a peep. I've been calling CQ arfcom.

You should be able to hear something.... |

For the hell of it, try 28.350. Nada. Sorry. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I guess I'll keep wandering around 20m and see who I can find.
Thanks guys. Disappointing first try but I'll keep at it. |

I hear something on 14.283, but nothing readable. Preamp and filters working hard.....
|

I'm hearing someone calling CQ arfcom on 14.283, but too far down in the mud for me to make out. AB8 maybe?

I'm still learning this radio too (FT-857) so maybe it's something else on my end. I should be able to hear though. I'm tuning up nice on an LDG Z100. It's showing an SWR of less than 1 on most bands I try. |

40 meters might be a better band this time of night. I've only got 10-20 on the antenna. 40m wire dipole is the easiest antenna to make and deploy, you should make that the next project. |

I'll keep scanning, maybe things will pick up as it gets later.

Holy shit, 444, didn't realize who I was talking to. You're about 15 minutes away from me, right down the road from my parents.

I've got someone speaking Spanish on 14.273. That's something!

I hear Brazil on 14285. The band goes long this time of the day.
ETA: The one 444 mentioned above... |

Yep, not very far away. Probably has to do with the big valley I'm down in.

|

So, squelch and HF SSB don't mix. You need to leave it all the way "open" when running phone HF ops.

Whoa, I think I got a couple of guys on 14.194! Looked up one callsign and he's in SC.
|
|
The strongest signal for me on 20 at the moment is W5CBO on 14.258 in TX. 20 over, but he's about to sign, though.
