Anything I should know about it that should stop me from pulling the trigger on it or is there a better 2m/70cm rig in that price range that is better? I had the 7800r and I loved it |

I have a 7900 in both my vehicles and as my VHF/UHF base rig. It's a great
radio, I have no complaints. When you go to buy it, make sure you get it with the separation kit bundled with it. Usually it is, but some places un-bundle to advertise a lower price. Only other things you should know is that it does have a fan for cooling, so keep that in mind when mounting, and the audio is maybe a touch quiet -- I've mounted it without using extension speakers in both cars, but sometimes at highway speeds I'll have issues hearing it mounted under a seat. |

It's a good radio
I like them It doesn't have dual receive or cross-band repeat (the TMV71A kenwood does...but kenwood charges extra for the remote kit, so add that to the price)) If you don't need crossband repeat, it's a solid choice I like the single receive, especially in a mobile Keep it Simple I worked NA1SS with a 7900 driving to the rifle range in my friend's truck. 
the 8900 is a WASTE 10 and 6 FM is DEAD 99% of the time

For about 40 more than the 7900, theres the 8800.
Nice radio and 2 vfo's

My only issue with the 8800 is no backlit keys. I may use one for a base with a power supply but backlit is a must when I am mobile.

After you memorize THREE buttons, you wont even look (read) the buttons in the light or dark. 1st button, POWER. 2nd button VFO/MEMORY. 4th button, SCAN. Thats all I ever use, I can 'see' the buttons from the light on the display. I would by another 8800 in a heartbeat. |

again-FWIW!
I currently have a Kenwood TM-G707a in the truck. It's a dual-band/single tuner rig. It works really well and is pretty simple to use. My only complaint would be the single tuner. The 7800 was my intended target back when, but the 707 was found at too good a price to skip. I'm sure they are both complimentary rigs-with single VFO's. OP if you can swing it, snag a dual VFO-YMMV |
