What is meant by the action of a rod. light weight- medium? and what action is good for mostly farm pond fishing- bass, bluegill. also can the same action that can handle these fish also handle trout, steelhead? thanks

Action = point of bend in blank.

Fast action = quick bend in blank (towards tip)

Slow action = bend in lower half of rod

Power and action are very often confused.  Action is technique specific.  You wouldn't want to fish a jig or worm on a moderate action rod, just as you wouldn't want to fish a crankbait on a fast action rod.

Yup , how the rod bends and how far down the shaft it bends.

...Try a #30 King Salmon on a 10 1/2 ft ultra lite med to slow action rod with 12lb test..........No you wont turn his head when he decides to go where he pleases and your standing on a rock outcropping along the river bank........PURE FUN....
