You'll burn out quickly if you do them very regularly. Every flipping 12 year old and 40 year old living in mommy's basement that has never done $hit will post that you should do this or that differently or otherwise post some retarded comment that they have NO IDEA about.

For example- "the light on your inverter is going to IGNITE the hydrogen gas put off by your battery bank and it's going to blow up"
 That's a real comment some a$$tard put on one of my videos....

This after 8 years or more of having that system. How the #$%$ is an enclosed LED light on an inverter going to "ignite" battery gasses?

Or how about starting a video showing that your using a FAKE hard rubber rifle and show that by bending the barrel, then have some dumbass post "you shouldn't point the gun at the camera."

Trust me, this $hit gets REALLY old and you'll be throwing your hands up thinking to yourself- "damn, I'm working my arse off here giving away free info and some slugs are just crying that I said something wrong, or didn't put out a new video (free chicken for them) every 2.5 seconds."  "Why haven't you put out new videos?" CAUSE OF THE FRICKIN RETARDS!!!

If your going to do it, do it for yourself, do it when YOU feel like doing it and to hell with retards with no experience leaving dumb comments.

As sort of a "normal" consumer of this kind of thing, what will pull me in is if you do exactly as you said--post the failures as well as the successes, but let us get to know you and your homestead.  In other words...don't make it completely clinical or educational, but let us see who you all are and what you're doing and why, and the disappointment that comes with the failures and the WOOT that comes with the successes.

I'm not saying to make a lifetime drama out of it, but the thing that will set you apart will be whether we feel for you and your family or not, and that will keep me coming back more often (and this is my point.)  An educational video once a week is too much. Checking in to the Minnesota homestead folks I've come to care about?  Once a week is not too much.  

None of this is easy to do of course, but success comes from connecting with people, if numbers of hits and views is important to you.  And what people connect to is....something that makes them feel.  

They'll care about anything---even your engine overhaul...if you show them why it's important to you, and what it means to you if you can't get it to work.

Not sure that's any help, but there you go.

On the other hand, and playing devil's advocate a bit..

Those idiots are not your real audience, so I think you have to learn to let the haters hate, and keep the end game in mind.

If something turns into a big argument between commenters, you have teh power to delete those, right? (I'm only assuming so...that you have some level of control over the interactions on your page?)  Otherwise, just let them comment, make sure there's not a big fight (which would make me run away as a consumer) and keep putting out good content.  Eventually, if you just focus on the people who appreciate what you're doing, it grows.

Disclaimer:  I say this ONLY from watching a number of friends do this.  Their advice is always something like (I'm paraphrasing), "Yeah, there are always idiots, but you just don't focus on them.  You just keep looking at where you're going, listen to constructive critique when it comes from MORE than one person or really makes sense to you, and don't let anybody distract you from your purpose."

If you focus on the haters, you'll never get anything done.

I'm not saying that's easy. Plenty of times those friends call me to vent. But then they get it out of their system and go right back to doing their thing.

ETA: I agree fully that quality is more important than quantity. However there is a sort of minimum interval if you want to build an audience.  I'd say once a month would be the absolute minimum.

FYI, I voted for every two weeks also.

Mostly because when I get something in my inbox once a week, it gets deleted because I just don't have that much time.  Twice a month I can manage to watch more easily.

I think monthly is okay too, or every three weeks or so..  

The stuff with valuable information? Yeah, I watch that even if it goes out to a month.  Beyond that I tend to forget. But there is an exception to the "beyond one month" rule.

A few thoughts I considered posting the first time but did not.  I dunno if they're helpful or not, but here goes.

If you have a feed, so I can sign up for it and get an email each time you post a new segment, and if your videos are good enough to make me sign up (meaning you give enough time to any one subject...like the chicken laying her first egg and looking really confused, but not too much time (which means you'll edit so we don't get the two hours UP TO the egg laying, because then after I get the gist of it, I'll click away from your video and not only miss the end, but be less inclined to click ont he next one) then I will go, "OMG, A new Rat Patrol video!" and I will click on it (or save it for the evening when I can relax with it and have wine) and I will watch.  I will do that even if it's been two months since the last one.

While I understand the above poster's warnings about the stuff you should not do, and that's all very true...you do not need to appear as perfect.

I think it's really important to separate the two main factors, which are TECHNIQUE and RELATABILITY.  Many, many, MANY people do not understand this separation.

Your techniques for video production need to be good. Don't make us sit through boring shit.  Don't hem and haw and hesitate and stutter and go "uhhhh" every three words.  The way you learn to not do this is to videotape yourself and then watch it back.  You'll be amazed how bad you are.  DON'T STOP.  Fix that stuff.  Correct your technique and move ahead.  Do this BEFORE you post the video.  The first few may take a few repeats to get right before you ever post the first one.

BUT.....The more "human" you and your family look on camera (if you're going to show your family--if not, the more human YOU appear), the better. When you butcher chickens, if your little ones cry, I think you should say that, even if you don't show it on camera (I do realize showing your little ones, even if they're fifteen, is a risk).

If you wish you'd handled it differently, I think you should say that.  Admit it, right there in front of God and everybody, because that makes you one of us. It makes you HUMAN.  It makes us relate to you and care.

FWIW, I make my living telling stories, and I have spent a lot of time both behind cameras and in front of them. (and no, I will not tell anybody where to look)  I've got a (very old) degree that says I know how to do this, and experience doing it.

But that degree is worth only half of the equation.j Because although it taught me to speak clearly and cleanly on camera (no uh...and, uh...etc)  it did not teach me the bottom line.  The bottom line is that when a reader or a watcher feels for you and your situation, they will keep watching/reading.

NOTHING ELSE will make people click on your links.

You seem to be literate and know what you're doing, which puts you ahead of many of the prepping type sites lately.

I'd go for something every week or two. Just depends on content and length

I saw your update about teh crazy.  Are the pics of the kids gonna stay when their faces don't show?  You could do that with video too, although I understand that even that adds a whole nother layer of concern as far as security.  

My husband has recently had a scary stalker (older lady...not someone he can threaten and make go away) and if we had kids I would be a little freaked out and go into helicopter parent mode for certain. So I get the need for taking care.

Really good material there if you have any time to record it, or make threads about it.

Understand if you don't.  Jeez...it's a busy time of year and you've got a lot going.

Love seeing the progress though.
