What are people using to organize/rotate their canned food? Wife has finally gotten on board with food preps but I now need to find a way to keep the cans organized in a 20" deep shelf.

Proper sized boxes from uline or your favorite vendor. Simple, effective and cheap.

I switched to these can rotation racks. These will work for you as they are only 16.5" deep.  They are also on sale right now.

They work well and make rotation easy but they take up a lot more room.  You can stack many more cans without these in the same space.  But then rotation is harder.

Use these for your less used items that will need to be rotated.  Leave some shelves alone and stack up on the good stuff you like to eat.

Having this thing on wheels makes it super simple to pull out and reload as needed.



Depending on your storage area lining shelving units up like a library may or may not be possable.



Look at the cardboard units, as well as search for more home made units, to find stuff you load from the front and it rolls to the back and falls down and rolls forward for use.  Makes it easy to load it.



Since I have been storing food the easist thing I have figured out to do with the stuff I actually buy and use on a regular basis is to be able to load the newer stuff behind the older stuff and make rotation super easy.



I used to really worry about using every square inch, but I am willing to have fewer cans in a given space if rotation is automatic when I use it.



I am going to make some stuff for a shelving unit so I can load from front and have it roll back and then forward for use.  Once I do that the next project is the picture above.



 

Yes, the uprights are just 2x4's.  My vertical offset for pitch is probably closer to 3", but not for any good reason, as long as it's sloped it shouldn't be a problem.

The trays themselves actually slide out the back so I can switch them with trays with different spacing, for say tuna cans or something.

Putting up a new finished garage that will include a reloading/gear room for me and we will now have what I consider a "huge" pantry instead of crawling down to our 4ft tall damp basement for stuff. The wife is planning on building a rotator however I think its on a bigger scale. I will find out her plans and pass them along.

The only problem with the big ones is they get heavy as hell. If you have permanent room and dont have to move it, they are awesome.





Just something to consider.

I have a couple of those (different maker but pretty much the same thing), can't remember where I bought them.  Light, adjustable for the size of can you want to store, work well.  Makes rotating stock easy.
