Is anyone else just getting plain stressed out with all of the bleak news with gun control lately?
While I have only been prepping for just short of a year now, My main prepping job and cash flow has gun toward guns/ammo/reloading supplies this year. We started a nice garden this year and built a chicken coop. The wife learned to can and took care of most of the food preps. I spent as much time as I could learning to hunt deer this year. I got my first deer as well. We were both shown how to butcher the deer and chickens. On top of other things we have come along ways in a short period of time. I learned how to reload and have a nice setup and lots of ammo to go round. (wish I had more supplies) Wife gave me pretty much free range to buy what ever guns and supplies I felt we needed. I expanded my collection quite a bit getting guns for her and for my sons to use in the future.Taught her to shoot as well and she likes it. Is this the kind of thing we are prepping for? I just drive around all day listening to the news and talk shows and it seems nothing good is going to come out of this and am getting stressed and a little bit sad. . I just keep thinking I have spent way to much cash on guns and ammo that are going to be outlawed or attempted to be taken from me. |
|
I try to tune out all the crap. I never did watch the national news, watch anything politically motivated, Hell, if it gets real bad I don't even read GD. There's nothing I can do about it, no need to worry myself about it.
I don't have a boat load of funds to buy shit with, so what little I got will have to do, and if it ain't enough, oh well. I don't get stressed over this kinda shit, if I did I'd go insane. I do try to go hiking every so many weeks, just to get out, nothing like a nice quiet walk in the woods to de-stress. |
|
I feel your pain op. Im in the same boat almost to the same detail as you minus the hunting got a hog hunt planned in Sept. But it is somewhat depressing, more so if you have just started. I bet all those that have know ammo food water put away are really feeling it. We are better of than most.

That's why we prep... This. I have shifted from ammo to focusing only on food now that ammo is scarce. I am glad that so far I have stayed a couple steps ahead of all the panic. Bought guns and mags, bought ammo in advance of the panic, and have a 9 months supply of food laid in for when it gets really ugly later this year. Working on getting more. |
|
It makes me sick thinking what can happen. I told my folks that with gun related being scarce or sky high prices we can focus on other stuff we need to purchase.
|
|
Agreed...that is the one nice thing, I am not running around looking for ammo and mags or anything gun related really. I just worry about what I already own and what will come of it.
I don't watch the news and listen to Sirius radio during the day, But even the normally funny talk shows I listen to are depressing. Never went to GD until a few weeks ago and going to have to stay out of there. Learning knowbody knows anything and if they do its not good news anyway. Going to turn my attention more to food again, but we are running out of spare room, as I have a sucky basement that is pretty much as full as possible now. |
|
Just turn the radio and TV off. There's nothing we can really do about it for the next couple of years anyway. Keep doing what you're doing - you are definitely on the right track - and enjoy your life with your family.
Get ready to hide the guns if necessary. Hopefully you're loaded up on ammo... Get ready to hide it too. |
|
Yes OP I am.
You will be more stressed out about it when the mods move this thread to GD because they are "Trying to keep all of the shooting/doom and gloom-gun ban stuff out of the SF. It really doesn't belong there" IBTM. |

I sold a ton of guns to pay for my wedding 2 years ago and i have been very slowly building it back up.. then came baby so its hard to justify dropping 1200 on a new colt AR or $300 for ammo when you need diapers. Im a wreck. I barely have ammo to fill my mags. very stressed out man.
|
|
I'm good on guns, ammo, and reloading supplies. I'm spending the money I would have spent on shooting on other preps right now. It's all good.
Just think if it was food flying off the shelf. |
|
Many people have said this, and it's one of my favorites...
Prepare for the worst, while hoping for the best. It's really all we can do, and the possibility of the worst is why we do what we do. When it all gets to be too much, go do some busy work. Organize something you've been meaning to, play with the kids(if you have kids), or even go shoot a little bit. Just do something to keep your mind from eating you up. |
|
I understand OP as it keeps driving me crazy as well... Not much we can do other then let our voices be heard and our presence known.
Just have to take things one step at a time I guess. |
|
i had this very same conversation today with several friends. seems like everyine is holding their breathe waiting to see how bad it is going to be. tense is the word . the good part though is all these friends are pretty squared away and have been stocking and storing and better off than 95% of shooters.
|
|
I wouldn't worry right now... but the latest developments are not very promising
|
|
Funny you mentioned this.
Last 2-3 days my wife keeps constantly asking if something is wrong.. I just tell her I am watching and waiting. Meanwhile, Im staying up late reloading, packing and organizing..

I am more pissed than stressed. Stupid politicians just annoy me. I am good on guns, ammo and mags for the most part although I could use more .22 and 12ga but all of my main go to weapons are covered. Those 2 are just below my comfort zone for ammo supplies. Focusing on increasing the other preps and hoping for the best. I don't think I will be surprised by anything they try to pull, but you can damn sure bet I am ready for it.
|
|
Yeah,I wish I had more than I do but lucky to have what I got.

This is not the time to stick your head in the sand and hide. There are many organizations and reps trying to protect our rights concerning 2nd amendment. Get involved with them. They do need your help. This is the time to get focused.

However being new to being aware to what's going on in my country ...it just seems pointless ...And it sucks that seems to be all the hope we have I am planning on driving 3 hours to my Capitol though...to help do my part |

Care to share? That's kind of a rough thing to put out there with nothing to follow it up. Not jumpin your butt, you just kind of left us hanging there.

I'm not particularly worried about new gun control. The House is firmly in the hands of Republicans. Even most of the Democrats remember what happened in 1996 after the 1994 federal AWB was passed. They lost control of Congress for a decade, and only GWB's shenanigans handed it back to them.
But we've got to stay involved. If everyone who's dropped $2000+ on another (stupidly marked up) AR15 and cases of ammo to 'put back just in case' ... simply gave $200 of that to the NRA or 2nd Amendment Foundation (Gura just filed cert for a carry case with SCOTUS!) and wrote a personal LETTER (not clicked an email form) to their Senators and Representatives, the political landscape would be different. People spend more time typing worried posts on internet forums than they do typing letters to politicians. I don't understand. It's not lack of time or unwillingness to put their thoughts into words that stops them. Is it apathy, hopelessness? A couple weeks ago I wrote a letter to one of my congressmen, who's a Democrat. In the letter I included a copy of the check I wrote to his opponent prior to the last election. I told him that if he supported any new gun control, I'd give 2x as much to his next opponent; if he worked against it, I'd donate to his re-election campaign. I'm a single-issue 2A voter now; if a Democrat vigorously supports our RKBA, I'll vote for him even if I disagree on other subjects. You CAN influence the people who represent you. Email, call, and write/print/fold/envelope/stamp/mail your position to your elected officials. And then relax and live your life. |

I've been prepping since before there was was a fancy name for it; it's just always seemed good not to depend on others any more than you have to. I don't lie awake at night worrying about an asteroid impact or a CME taking out the grid, but I'm edjumacated enough to recognize that it could happen. I've watched our country bury itself under a pile of inescapable debt, and having dug my way out of a similar situation on a personal level a couple decades ago, I'm concerned about how or even if we'll be able to do the same on a national level.
But when I woke up on the morning of November 7, 2012, and took a look at the news headlines, I had an epiphany so strong it was almost like getting an electric shock. I realized that foolish ignorance has become prevalent over reason, intelligence and common sense; the idiots had reached critical mass and now control the country, and to some extent, my life. I honestly don't think it's fixable. The economy, the gun control BS... all of it is just a symptom of an underlying infection of stupidity that will likely end our way of life as we knew it. Get those garden seeds ordered. |
|
We are standing pat. I will stay out of the gun stores and ammo aisle at Walmart so other people can bunker up. Except for January 19. If I'm not at a Gun Appreciation Rally on 1-19, I will buy a box of ammo. I have spent a few bucks on stamps to send letters to anti-gunner BS like newspapers, politicians, TV, Radio, etc. Plus, sent a few bucks to the NRA-ILA. Saturday, I'll be at a Town Hall Meeting asking what we can do to stop the Obama Destruction Train.

i wake up each day...i hug and kiss my family..i go to work..i provide the best i can...
no matter what happens ill still wake up,,love my family and do my best as a dad and husband to provide.... we all prep..we cant prep for everything..we just need to put one foot in front of the other each day and roll with it.....we all have morals and what we think is right,,each of us will need to do what they believe is the right thing when the time comes....no one in internet land can make those choices for us. ive been prepping for a while...id rather not lose my "tools" to senseless 1984ish rules....but the "fear" of that wont slow me down on my other preps.... |

I can't believe some of these replies.
Take this from somebody who has Chrons and a good dose of stress puts me in a hospital. We stress out over things we have no control over. Gun control is not one of those unless we let it. To de-stress, get involved. Join the NRA or send them more money. Email your federal and state representatives. Repeat as necessary. Get blunt if you have to. More than one representative I tell them they vote for that "Whatever extra money I have I'll spend to see they don't get re-elected." Its just exactly like work. Instead of worrying over it, simply get er done, stay busy. Tj |

Evaluate your risks and prepare accordingly. Financial struggle due to loss of job/medical issue/need a new septic field/etc is most likely. Then a weather related event that disrupts your ability to travel. Then a weather event that disrupts your power for a week or so. Then a house fire. Personal security is somewhere in there too. A total outright ban on gun ownership is somewhere above mutant zombie hordes, but not too much. I'd place the liklihood of inavailability to get food due to a panic higher than that. Take notes on what is gone. There is NO 22LR ammo in my area available. Stock up when prices come back down. They will, but it will be a year or so. |
|
The mood in my home has been pretty somber and despondent lately, due to the political climate and the pending AWB. Not trying to make this board my personal shrink or anything, but two young people trying to start a decent life together in this economy have enough worries to begin with. Add into it that we're both gun owners/enthusiasts, and it makes for some stressful days. I worry daily about her safety, especially once violent criminals are emboldened by the policies of this administration.
Plus, I live in a large, super liberal city where everyone outside of my local range is cheerleading for their master and just patting each other on the back about how 'progressive' they are. I feel like Cassandra... doomed to know the future, and to not have anyone believe me. |

Even if you completely ignore guns, the tax situation and insurance bullshit makes it all seem very bleak.

Stressed, angry, ya I hear ya. I’m being targeted like a criminal because I choose to defend myself and follow the true intentions of the 2nd Amendment. I’m being treated with contempt because I run a business and have some success. I’m watching the government and the Fed and the banks destroy the economy. And I’m the one who’s crazy for having a backup plan?! WTF. |

I guess I'm beginning to think that most of us are barking up the wrong tree right now. Let's think about a couple of things: (first) there is now a national conversation going on about guns (second) there is some willingness to consider legislative action on same. What would happen if:
- We (gun owners cum civil rights activists) use the opportunity of a conversation on guns to talk about EXPANDING our gun rights. Remember, normally most people don't generally want to talk about guns but most people DO want to talk about being able to protect themselves. We can use this opportunity to try to get expansions at both the state and federal level of our right to bear arms. In effect use the conversation to OUR advantage! - Since politicians are generally loathe to discuss guns in general but are now being forced to mealy mouth something, we need to provide our legislators with "balance". In other words, we need to not (only) be writing our legislators about not supporting gun/mag bans and the like, we need to provide them WHAT WE DO WANT. Remember, this could possibly be a "generational moment" and we must give our elected representatives SOMETHING TO SAY "YES" TO. This is precisely how the opportunistic commie-pinko lefties get things done in their favor. So "we" need to come up with a wish list of all the pro-gun/civil-right/freedom things we'd like to see implemented into law. Send -those- items to your congresscritters as what you want to see INSTEAD OF stupid bans etc. If our legislators only have the option of more or less banning, they'll take less banning. If we give them the option of -eliminating bans and expanding rights- and banning, they'll choose to do nothing and we keep the status quo. Whether it is in politics or your personal life, there must be balance. Now is not the time to be stressed out, now is the time to take an active interest in furthering our rights, not hoping for less of them to be taken away. YOU must be the balance. As the line in the Star Trek show says, "Make it so." |

And I’m the one who’s crazy for having a backup plan?! WTF. I'm sure millions of other insightful folks felt the same way before their country was stolen and they were killed en mass. I hired 2 refugees from Cambodia when they managed to come to the USA sponsored by a church, they were among my best employees, who told me horrific stories abt both their families being killed when the socialists/communists stole power in their country. One's father had a small airport and the other's father was a doctor and mom was a teacher. Their parents and families were murdered since they had no way to protect themselves. Their officials took away their means over time. Then turned their jack booted thug 'army' loose on them. The two employees each escaped by walking thru the jungles for a long time to another country. The socialists killed many many families in Cambodia in the name of socialism and the parallels today are amazing. It was prolly worse when the famines were engineered in Russia to kill so many millions. This is what socialists do but most folk's heads are too far up their fancy-pants asses to even begin to consider this happening to them. Especially folks from Kalifonia. |

I’m in Illinois so I’m fighting 3 batches of legislation: County, State, and Federal. I suspect that they will force though gun legislation the same way they forced that horrible budget. I appreciate the Trek reference and your optimism; it’s still troubling to have to constantly fight a losing battle. Worse still; I don’t think anyone in office (Rep or Dem) really has any understanding of the economic issues at hand. Neither really supports gun rights beyond sporting and self defense. The nation itself is becoming weak, more concerning is that they are taking comfort in their own weakness. |

Interestingly, abt 15 years after I hired them [they both were still in my employ] they got guns and when able got CCWS.

Now is not the time to be stressed out, now is the time to take an active interest in furthering our rights, not hoping for less of them to be taken away. YOU must be the balance. As the line in the Star Trek show says, "Make it so." I love your optimism. I already do what you said, but I’m preaching to the choir. My reps are already on my side. I've noticed folks who quote StarTrek stuff don't always see the big pix. The folks intent on stealing our country depend on the gulibility, trust and innocence of the people they plan to conquer. Thanks to all the brainwashing mediums at their disposal in our counrty, there is no shortage of folks who are conditioned to think it can't happen here. While all the while... IT IS!!!!! Right under our noses with us holding their tools helping them enslave us -leading to far worse things. Pretty damn pathetic. |

I honestly believe (and I could be wrong) that we have some ways to go before stuff like “gun confiscation”, “economic collapse”, or “the installation of an authoritarian system of government”.
I suspect: 1.Economic Failure (I predict 15-20 years or so, once the full effect of the baby boomer generation’s retirement has drained the already failing economy to the breaking point). 2.Then, gun confiscation (based on the violence post-national bankruptcy) 3.Then , a break from the constitution to a new authoritarian system of government. (which will probably be met by cheers). Then again, this could all be avoided with some logical, common sense now. But I guarantee ya its not going to come from the current generation of Dems and Reps. President Rand Paul….you’re my only hope. |
