Here are some great videos of 18th century (and earlier) methods of baking with firewood and making earth ovens.

lots of those out along the very old railroad lines out in my area. I always thought they were chinese but come to find out there were more greeks that worked on those lines.

I'm guessing you'd use regular clay soil instead of kitty litter for a more authentic oven?

That is very cool. Looks like a fun and relatively easy project.

Im guessing anything might be better than commercial cat litter including some piled up rocks chinked with mud ( not sedimentary or river rocks for the retards) Than some crazy chemical infested cat littler.

I'd guess you'd use whatever you have at hand.  Depending on where you are you may have clay soil (like me) that will bake up into a nice oven.

EH, Townsend!  Always a day late on the current thing.  I have built 3 bake ovens.  Work wonderfully except in real cold weather and THEY must be protected from rain.

If you dig through re-enactor's research sites you can find some very cool information- Camp Kitchens are just one aspect they dwell upon.

That's really cool, you've inspired me to finally build one. I think I'll make the inside mold of cardboard.

Thanks.  The rural Egyptians still cook their bread in their mud ovens.  I'm going to have to make one in the back.
