Engineering company Cosmo says its "Noah" shelter is made from enhanced fibreglass and could save users from disasters such as the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March that devastated Japan's northern coast and left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.

The company's president, Shoji Tanaka, said the capsule could hold four adults and had survived many crash tests.

It has a lookout window and breathing holes, and could also be used as a toy house for children.

The company said it had completed the capsule earlier this month and had received 600 orders.

Better be some thick fiberglass. A snorkel and some comms would be a nice touch.

To be an earthquake shelter, you have to be IN it when the eathquake hits.

Wonder if it could be wired up like a Japanese capsule hotel room berth

The Japanese have an automatic earthquake detection and warning system, if a seismograph near the epicenter trips it sends instant messages to everyone. The calls outrun the really damaging seismic waves by anywhere from a few seconds to a couple minutes. Enough time if you're both lucky and well drilled.

It took just seconds for a seismometer located on land, closest to the epicenter, to detect enough signals to determine an alert was necessary. The alert was automatically issued at 2:46:48 via locations such as factories, schools, TV networks, radio stations and mobile phones. Professor Watanabe's cell phone buzzed seconds later thanks to a technology called the Area Mail Disaster Information Service.

Damaging S-waves travel at about 2½ miles (4 km) per second.
