On thursday we went to scout out a trapping job on a 60 acre estate. The care taker took Laura and I around in one of thoose UTV things. It had a jump seat in the utility bed and laura parked herself there.

Friday morning she woke up and noticed a bite behind her knee... It bothered her a little so I cleaned it , hit it with a sting relief wipe and we were on our way to check jobs.

Friday night it had gotten real red and was sore. We moved on to using triple antibiotic ointment and I gave her 2 motrin.

Saturday morning she was walking gimpy and it looked worse but we had faither it was going to get better.

Saturday night it got  gross and looked bruised. he didnt want to go for an expensive ER trip and wanted to see her DR monday morning.  F'n thing was straight ugly. dark and swollen , mild fever but she is stubborn and tough.

In the pic below you can see a dark spot this was the epicenter of the original bite.

Sorry thats the last pic I took. It didnt really get worse untill monday morning.

Monday morning we go to see her Doc. He says " HOLY SHIT" and get another Dr in the practice. She says " Holy shit" They clean it up some and decide she needs to go to the ER.

Asshole doc in the Er says on its probably just a tick bite 6 hrs later still in the ER they jacked her up with two seperate IV antibiotics , 900mg of tylenol a syringe of benedryl , a syringe of pain killers , prescribed her antibiotics and pain killers and had called in every specialist they could think of. They took atleast a dozen things of blood and samples of the clear liquid inside the swollen bite.

Myself , 3 RNs a PA and 2 Drs this it was a spider bite. One idiot woman who never really looked at it called it a tick bite

Hope it all turns out alright.

This is a reminder of how what seems small can escalate out of hand quickly.

Yeah especially since she kept it very clean and it was attended to. I cant wait to see what the lab results come back saying!  In 2 days it went from a small bite to WTF

Check into applying a nitro patch, if you think it is a Brown Recluse bite.

My bet would be spider bite also. We see dogs with them quite often. Starts out as a small inflamed area. Then the flesh around it start to die off. Most look real bad before they every get better. Can leave a nasty scar.

I think we are well out of their range of a brown recluse and it shows no signs of a crater , hole or errosion.  THey mixed 1.5 grams of ampicillian into a small IV bag and pumped it into her. Then gave her 150ml of vancomycin to her also via IV. She is on her 2nd dose of oral antibiotics (Bactrim). She feels 10x better today and didnt even want her pain meds this morning. She is back to her pain in the arse self id say lol

yeah man, I worked with a dude that got bit by one, he was off work for nearly 5 months, they had to do some surgeries/skin graphs to fix his leg.

I was bitten by a spider on my ankle several years ago, I'm guessing a BR.   Ankle swole up, small ulcer with puss, totally laid me out.  I even had this shooting pain in my nads where I guess the venom traveled.  Anywho, just like you the doctor told me it was an ant bite....really, an ant?  From the time I was a kid I have been stung and bitten by wasps, ants, and ticks on my ears, nose, face, arms, fingers, nearly everywhere, and I never had a reaction like this.  Luckily the antibiotics whipped it pretty quick.  My dad wasn't so lucky; he was bitten and had a lesion for probably 5 months.

WOW!  I definitely want to know what the lab results are.  Glad she's doing better.  Stubbornness and pure tenacity will pull many through an otherwise nasty situation.

Back to the Er this morning. Wound looks better but her leg swelled up and she was in major pain. She is actually still at the hospital with a close friend who is an RN. Had to come home and let the monsters out.

I had something very close to that a few years back. I got an injection of AB (in the backside) and oral AB's. They pretty much knocked it out but it was few weeks before it went away. My doc's had the same oh shi$$ reaction as yours. Never found out what did it but I am pretty sure it was a spider bite of some sort.

BR's are here in MI so I would think they could be in CT as well.

THey called in an infectious diease specialist. Supposidly its just a bacterial infection that went wild after a simple bug or non venomous spider bite .  The nasty dark colors are out of it. Still looks gross but improving. They switched up her meds.

Best of luck to her. I got bit by an ant (yes, an ant) 3 years ago and wound up in the hospital for a week. Funny, the ER Drs had the same "oh shit!" reaction. It had gone from the size of a typical ant bite to the size of a half dollar in 12 hours. Hurt like hell. Had a necrotizing streph infection. Damn near lost my leg. 20% mortality rate. Infectious disease specialist came by everyday to pack my leg with "silver". And this will lie dormant in my system for the rest of my life. The Dr. figured the ant had simply walked through some dirty water and then bit me. Any type of bite, scrape, cut or blister gets an immediate dose of antimicrobial ointment.

From my understanding MRSA & a Brown Recluse bite can mimic each other.  Prayers out for your wife.  Please keep us informed.

Laura is doing well. Its dried out , scabbed over and healing just fine. Kinda crazy how a simple bite got infected with every day bacteria and went so bad so fast.

Just remember this little ordeal the next time you hear someone wanting antibiotics because they have a cold... Shit like that is why we have MRSA in the first place.

Glad to hear that your lady is doing better!

For everyone who doesn't read ... IT WAS NOT MRSA OR A BROWN RECLUSE (Thank God!). It was a simple bacterial infection. Infact it was some common every day bacteria that we all have on our skin. Just happened to love the bite on the back of her knee.

I had the same thing from a couple of ant bites in N.C.

I've never had a problem from ants before of after -I guess not all ants are equal!
