Has anyone tried the Deutsche Optik jerry can rack?
https://deutscheoptik.com/20-l-jerry-can-wall-or-vehicle-rack.html I'd like to be able to mount two cans in my truck bed for when I'm doing long trips. I have four red cans for gas, and four surplus (German) green cans with a yellow cap for diesel. I'd like to plus up my amount of gas before hurricane season. During Harvey, we used something like 12 gallons of gas for the Honda EU2000i during our time without electricity to power a window unit air conditioner and keep the fridge cold. I read the recommendation somewhere here about painting bedliner on the bottom of the cans to help prevent rust via condensation. I just recently put my cans up on a shelf to prevent that, but some of them have had the paint wear off, and have some surface rust. Now to read through this whole thread. |

I decided to really take a look at the cans I got from Ohio Prep and Supply. Imprinted into the metal on the side of the can it says "not for fuel use". Would that be an indication of a fake Nato can?

I'm a big person and have no problem lifting can up to pour gas a nozzle. My problem is trying to hold a can and siphon it off with just one arm that works.
I should say that I had no problem lifting a gas can up until the last couple of days. With the heart and muscle problems of the last couple of days I'm not certain if I'll even be able to pick a can up much less put gas into a gas tank with it. |

I have 6 Jerry cans that I bought from Old Grouch Surplus many years ago. 4 of them work fine, but 2 leak around the spout/can seal when I pour.
The caps don't leak, but I noticed with these two cans, that it does take less force to close them, and less force to lock the spout. I did try bending the clips down a little, but they just bend back up when clamping the spout, and still leak. Any idea what's going on? |

Two possibilities come to mind. 1 - Maybe your gaskets are getting old. Right now, due to tolerance stacking, two of your cans are leaking but it may just be a matter of time before they all do. Replacing the gaskets in the cans and the spout may fix the problem. 2 - It could be that on the two cans that leak, the flange that the gasket sits against may be damaged. It should be perfectly flat. It wouldn’t take much, especially if the gaskets are starting to get old. You should be able to check this against your cans that work. |

What is the siphon that you guys recommend? I googled super siphon and got a couple of different results. One with a bulb and one with a little metal end that you shake.

I use a shaker siphon most of the time if I'm using the whole can. Just keep in mind the can needs to be higher than what you are siphoning into.

I’ve recently gotten away from using the shaker siphon. I just couldn’t seem to use the thing without scraping the inside of the can. The NATO cans I use have a coating inside and I don’t think running something metal up and down against it seems like a very good idea. Now how much damage the metal end of the shaker is doing (if any) I have no idea. I still have a shaker around and always will, they’re just too good at what they do, I’m just not using it as my regular method for transferring gasoline out of the cans. I’ve gone to a Wavian pre-ban spout with the hose adaptor and hose. The tool box in the back of my Tacoma sits directly above the fuel filler location. I just put the can on the tool box, stick the hose in the fuel filler and slowly tip the can. Works well.
For kerosene I’ve always used something like this, since I think it gives me better control when not emptying an entire can. I've used the same four cans for gasoline storage for nine years and I rotate gas twice a year. I expect to be using those same four cans for many years to come. Be aware that the cam profile is different on DO cans so 3rd party accessories don't fit (like Jerry Can adapters for using the can as an aux fuel tank for a generator)

I got the set of 4 cans, the flexible long nose NATO spout and a set of 3 replacement gaskets with FedEx for $222.48 to the front door.

Any info on the best current jerry cans? I picked up some red Scepter cans a few years ago at Costco, but need a few more. They seemed to work ok.
Are the Deutsche Optic cans GTG? Can someone comment on them who has had them for a while and used them? |

These can usually be found on eBay used surplus at around $50.00 per or you pay twice that or better for brand new ones that find their way south from Canada. Deals do show up now and then so it might pay to shop around. There’s been a lot written about the DO cans in this thread, including on this page. If you're happy with the cans you have I think you can pick them up commercially. I think Amazon even sells them. |

I have a number of the Valpro jerry cans and have been very happy with them. I won't be doing this in the future, but I had been using one of the cans to fill my mower. While the the fuel level was low, the sides got sucked in and it appears to be permanent. I thought that filling the can would pop them back out again, but it didn't and I can only get 4.5 gallons in the can now. This isn't much of a loss, but it annoys me. I emptied it and slid a padded crowbar down inside, then attempted to pop the sides back out, but that didn't work. I thought about a suction dent puller, but I don't think there is enough flat area to get suction on.
Has anyone run into this or have any ideas? Thanks! |
