How many ammo cans do you all reccomend. I know it depends on how much ammo you have but whats a good general #?

If you can find them for a reasonable price, buy as many as you can afford.

Ammo cans are like houses/garages/barns. No matter how big, or how many, eventually you 'll find a way to fill them up.

I was like that for long awhile...
Then a friend had a great CraigsList score!
I'm sure, much to the neighbors displeasure, the excess are piled up in the driveway rusting.

Need to get busy painting them up.
(and filling them with moar ammo!)

I started with 3. I now have 18 and counting. I have a GI Joe's surplus that has the standard 50 cal for $10.00 each. I pick up a couple every other week or when I order another case of ammo. I now have (2) full of 9mm, .223, 7.62X54R. Working on getting more of everything.

You will need to watch out what you store them on. They get heavy pretty fast. If you try to use cheap shelf brackets that mount on the wall, they may not hold the weight.

So start with 10 and grow from there.

I stack them six high on the slab.
After a couple of years the carpet underneath them has compresses into what feels like masonite!

I bought some plastic cans from MTM, they are way bigger than .50 cans, which is convenient because I hate having dozens of military ammo cans around storing a relatively small amount of ammo apiece.

If you haven't yet, look at 20MM cans.
Those things are heavy when full of ammo (almost a 2-man carry)
but good for gear and other lighter stuff that won't fit in a .50 can.

I have about 20 right now and they are full, I NEED more. Always have more can than you have ammo that way you can work towards filling them up.

Figure roughly 1,000 rounds per can. Some ammo will be less; some will be more. How many rounds of ammo do you have to store? That should tell you how many ammo cans to get.

What I have found is that, as others have said, it is a good idea to have 5-6 extra cans in case you have an ammo score. I bought some really nice ones from Wideners when they still had them and have been using them as I need them.

The last gun show I went to had them for $3 each. I bought 5 even though I had a few unused ones. If they are still $3 at the show in a couple weeks I will get some more. They are handy for a lot of things.

I have mostly 30 cal and some 50 cal cans

In the 30 cal can range I have about 50 + with stored ammo.

About 10 in the 50 cal can range stored with ammo.

I also use them to store cleaning equipment, rags, patches, brushes, and Break free.

In another one I store magazines & loaders

The last one is a "Grab n Go" type can with 100 rounds ea. of .22lr, 9mm, 38 spl, 40S&W, .45acp, and .223.

And no its not a bug out can.

Just if I go anywhere I don't have to go looking for ammo for any inpromptu shooting with whatever I am carrying at the time.

All the ammunition that I am "storing" is in ammo cans. I have a few boxes worth in magazines and/or range bags. My answer to your question is figure out how much ammo you want to store and then how many cans you will need to store that much ammo... then buy about 5 to 10 more cans than you estimate you will need! Believe me, you will find uses for them that you never realized... emergency medical kit, cleaning kit, cleaning supply storage, magazine storage, storage for "shooting supplies" (garbage can category), etc... their uses are only limited by your imagination...

You will probably want a mix of can sizes... most of my cans are 50 cal cans although I do have a few 30 cal cans and a few saw boxes...

You could buy them based on how much ammo you plan on having. I tend to keep 1k of ammo in each for pistol calibers and smaller rifle calibers (9mm, 45acp, 223, 7.62 x 39). I only buy the standard 50 cal cans.

I've got maybe 15-20 50Cal. cans.

What allowed me to have so few is that I upgraded to MK19 40mm cans to hold the true bulk of the ammo that I don't intend to move much. 50Cal. cans are for transport, MK19 cans and grenade cans are for long term storage.

For what it's worth a MK19 can holds 2200 rounds of Wolf 223. Or 312ish rounds of 50BMG. Or around 36 boxes of 45ACP.

I have a couple 50 cal cans, but mostly the large plastic ones from cabelas. I want to say the big plastic ones hold about 2000 rounds or so. Maybe someone can correct me and give the actual number. Actually I think I will go unpack it and give you guys a count, its been bugging me a little bit lately anyway. Back in a few

EDIT- Ok, the blue ammo cans from cabelas holds 1800 rounds of 7.62x39. Damn, I gots alot of commie ammo

I reckon that I have a couple hundred or so. I also have some of the 40mm Mk19 cans. I just put 22LR in them. They are too heavy to move when full of ammo. I put bandoleered ammo in many cans, so I sometimes only get 400-600rd in them if i'm doing 8mm or 7.62x54R. I have about 10 30cal cans as go to cans for a bugout or range trip. The rest are 50cal. I got 50 of them from Cabelas for $2.88 each a year ago. I keep the excess on the back porch. I just bring one in and fill it as necessary.

You need enough to store all your ammunition that's not already in air- and water-tight cases.

I got lucky and found a guy who had bought a box truck full and he wanted to get rid of them as they were starting to rust a bit.

I spent a couple of weekends cleaning them up and using up my Y2K spray paint painting them. They are like better than new now. Color coding helps identify contents without even looking at the labels.

If you ever can buy them for $2-4 each or so, buy lots of them!
