I am looking for the cheapest online source for the N95 masks with valve. I have a ton of Purell and loads of surgical gloves. Any sources you guys willing to share? I am looking to stock up..maybe 50-60 masks...to start! Thanks.

check places like HD, lowes, harbor frieght etc. box of 18-20 will run about 1.50-1.99$ a mask on avg for good 95's.

Sides that to save funds, buy straight 70 or 90% alky vs hand gels, goes farther and does that same thing at 1/2 the cost!

Hand sanitizer is a good start and get in the habit of washing your hands...

Masks have disapeared around here!

Still, read this...

swine flu was no biggie.  i just got over it. it hit a little harder than any other flu. two - i'm getting bad alergies days, one - day in bed, one - day dragging around.  if you are already comprimised it could be a big event but for the average person don't worry about it any more than a bad cold.  just my input.  lots of rest and keep hydrated.

I was in a few car wrecks.

They were no biggies 'cause I walked away from them too.

Ok so how are guys prepping their med supplies? What do I need and how do I go about getting them? I heard of Tamiflu. How do I get a stash going like I see others on here have?

The gel gives you longer contact time than liquid alcohol.  You would either waste a lot of alcohol (runnign off onto the floor), or have to submerge your hands in a container to get the same effect.

Cost isn't too bad- like $6 for 2 liters at Sams, vs what, about a dollar for a 32 oz bottle.  I use the big bottle to refill a 1 oz squeeze bottle I take with me on trips (airplane or subway) in flu season.

FYI

Alcohol hand sanitizer and the other hand gels are no replacement for proper hand washing. Better than nothing but far from ideal.

+1 on the Home Depot for N95 mask

Walgreens/Walmart etc. were completely out of them and HD still had 'em, most people don't think to look there.............run about 1.00 a piece.  Box of twenty for 20.00ish.

Get your H1N1 preps ready???  You are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too late for that  You should've been ready before the outbreak, that is why they call it preparation:

prep⋅a⋅ra⋅tion  /ˌprɛpəˈreɪʃən/  Show Spelled [prep-uh-rey-shuhn]  Show IPA
–noun
1.a proceeding, measure, or provision by which one prepares for something: preparations for a journey.
2.any proceeding, experience, or the like considered as a mode of preparing for the future.
3.an act of preparing.
4.the state of being prepared.

That would be like waiting for TEOTWAWKI & saying, "OK it happened yesterday, help me get my stuff ready for it.".

Just givin' ya alittle shit...  Seriously though, if you were serious about this...  You should've been doing your "prep" the second you heard about it on the news.

Lock yourself in the house next weekend - keep a log and write down everything that you reach for.  Then calculate your consumption and ensure that you have a 30 day supply inside the house to avoid going near the public.

Almost $7.00 for 2 at Lowes! How long will these things last once you are using them?  I know our gas mask canisters would last for a certain amount of time depending on the agent, but N95 are just exposed to filtering air.

TJ,

I am a virologist by education and your advise is dead on.  The masks may provide limited protection as the virus particles may well get a ride on dust, lint, etc that a person may inhale but the masks really are not joing to really prevent someone from getting sick as well as just good old soap and water.  Bleach and alcohol also works to sanatize a surface and flu is not teribly difficult to kill.

We have a newborn at home, well he is 6-weeks old now, and we are concerned because of his risks far more then usual so we wash our hands like crazy to prevent any sickness but the H1N1 flu is certainly on our minds.

The first consideration in planning to prep is, the worst case scenario can and WILL happen.  All the mask and sanitizers are good, but what about medical preps just in case you do get it?  I've heard predictions that this could come back as a REAL pandemic in the actual flu season.  I think the last thing you can do in an actual pandemic, SHT health F, is go to the hospital or doc.  I see it being, potentially, a real nightmare.  So, what can you get for your family, just in case this is a real situation in the near future?

I hear you die because your lungs clog with mucus, oxygen may help, steroids may help, a cystic fibrosis lung vacuum
may help, I'm not doctor but I have seen one on tv.

The N-95 paper mask are only good for a short time. Moisture will destroy its effectivness. Breathing in and out puts moisture on the mask. I found I could go about 4 hours before needing replacement. Please be aware that the N-95 must be fitted properly to work and not all people should wear one. Some medical conditions can cause more harm than good. The OP ask for a mask with the valve. You won't find those at HD or Lowes (least I have not seen them). I was trained in infection control and have fitted over 1000 employees. WJ

I've never seen a paper one, they have allways been nonwoven fiber.  Much like porn, I can't define nonwoven fiber (vs paper), but I know it when I see it.  They hold up well, I've worn them for 8 hrs straight  (minus lunch breaks) in the past, and probally get 4-6 hrs out of the ones I use for grinding now.

Pathfinder

I here ya Pathfinder! But better late than never. I am hearing that it may come back worse in the winter, that's why I want to have something in place by then. I also am VERY limited on funds. Plus I am the only one in my immediate circle that has a prepping mentality. My better half is all for it UNTIL it takes away funds from important stuff like food, bills blah blah blah!

Our local Lowes has them. $ 19.95 for 10 of the masks with filters. Another thing to add would be surgical tape. As another poster said they need to be fitted. If you have huge gaps around the edges, it will not be as effective.
