Just a thought, if I was going out with a bunch of youngsters, I'd anticipate many to be faster than me and some to want me to hump their gear. I'd also expect come unexpected weather conditons a few to be either not use to it or unprepared.
Rather than trying to impress the little buggers, I'd lean way more ultra-light for this adventure. Should work fine for AZ this time of year. I'd keep it real simple, tarp, ground pad, ultra-light bag that can unzip to make a blanket or a blanket, freeze dried for weight, food bars, jerky, small pocket stove (your choice), filter, headlamp, Nalgene cup and bottle, and a lightweight hydration bladder bag to haul water in. Water would be a key one since I would anticipate less preparedness from the others in that area so gotta have that bladder.
Weight is king under any conditions but it really rules when you may be carrying someone else s gear on top of yours.
