Mine is a Respironics model, and it will run on the AC cord or 12v DC. I have run it on a small, 12v lead acid battery when camping. When we have hurricanes that knock out the power, I use a genny to power the house, so the CPAP still works.

stealth, so the solar cell will recharge the batteries ? Will this setup run indefinitely ?

Will this setup run indefinitely ? well I wired 2 solar cells in parellel (they are for car batteries so 12v) Don't remember the specs, but a full day of sunlight should charge the battery okay for a night's use. If not then 3-5hrs of sleep, while not a full 7-8, is still better than none :). Indefinetly? well if the battery craps out he can use any car battery or deep cycle. I velcrod the solars on top of the box, but they can be removed and run out on a cable if he needed it at home in a semi-permanent setting. |

On topic but not really. My brother uses one and my father is said to need one. How do you know? Can you live without it? If you need one to sleep, how in the world did people sleep 40 years ago without them?

Harder to focus/concentrate as you are always tired and mentally fatigued from choking all night. My father finally broke down and saw a sleep specialist after falling asleep at the wheel due to the fatigue. |

A couple of quick thoughts, you may want to call the company that services the machine and get a list of "most likely to fail"parts and get them ordered and packed away.
Second, find a good source for dry lead acid batteries that you add the acid to energize. Normally batteries that are already filled have a limited life span, some as few as two to three years. I've seen the car type batteries that are empty and have the electrolyte in a separate container. That would greatly increase your battery supply storage time. This is if you truly want to plan for a long term shtf. |

I went camping and simply plugged my CPAP machine into an AC-DC transformer in my car. Ran 3 days without problems, & didn't noticably drain the battery. **I also had a jump starter battery along, just in case... when in the boonies, you DON'T want a flat car battery!**

sleep apnea is nothing to mess around with. make sure you have a backup. the solar/battery setup seems great.
i know a bunch of people with this. one had a NDE and another was so fatiged that he fell asleep at the wheel and drove into a snowbank and into a feild. |
