I am going to do something for 2018. I would like any info, links, boats, guides... you have that you could recommend and pass on. Not sure but am thinking blue or black.

cabo san lucas mexico is guaranteed stripped marlin if that's what you want.  blue and blacks are best in sep-nov in cabo.

thanks. Dumb to marlin fishing. Average stripe size? Odds of catching a blue or black? Any charter you could suggest?

What is your budget?

Take a trip to the FADS off Costa Rica

Do you have budget?  For the best chance at catching a blue, the FAD trips out of Costa Rica are probably your best bet.  They require running over 100 miles off the coast and an overnight on the boat.

Otherwise the DR has a good blue Marlin bite.

If you are wanting to stay in the US it's hard to beat Oregon Inlet, NC for white Marlin, and an opportunity to catch a blue. They have the what is arguably the best charter fleet in the country between the Oregon Inlet fishing center and Pirates Cove Marina.

Other good international destinations are Cabo San Lucas for striped Marlin, Tropic Star Lodge in Panama for Blacks, Australia for Blacks.

Kona, Hawaii is also a good place for Blue Marlin.

Just caught my first Blue last week. 225#. I have been trying for a blue for 28yrs. Caught in Zihuatanejo Mx.

Got my first marlin 11 yrs ago in Cabo. Actually everyone on the boat that day caught a marlin, all striped marlin. All 100-125#. Myself and one other of our group caught 2. We fished with THESE GUYS.

If you are happy just getting a billfish, Zihuatanejo MX, is one the cheapest places on the planet to catch a sailfish. Boats go for $180-450/ day. That is for the boat and tackle, total, not pp. Fishing starts 1/2 mile from shore and can go out to 30+ miles.
If need info, IM me, I can hook you up with reputable captains.

I guess I'm lucky as shit. I caught my first blue when I was 16 in the gulf ~150 miles off the coast. We were trolling between deep water rigs.
