I got what's essentially an axe, but with triangular "extensions" protruding about halfway down the blade.
The thing splits like no other splitting-maul or axe I've ever used or seen! Not terribly heavy, either. I'd guess about 4 lbs, or so. I think I got it at Lowe's or Home Depot. |

I never had trouble with a 20 lb maul. Axe for the smaller stuff
We also had a hydraulic splitter that hooked up to the tractor though. |

Have had a 16# monster maul since the 70s.
Best to have a couple guys take turns. Goes fast that way. Take 20 or 30 swings, hand it to the next guy. Rarely have to hit a piece twice. These days, I get my sons to split most of mine.

Splitting maul, sledge, and a wedge for the nasty stuff... I split to much to do it by hand, and our birch and other wood is twisty and tough as hell... Takes a lot of time to split that type of wood by hand. We use a troy bilt splitter.

Logs, like in firewood?
Used axes, sledge and wedges, different mauls over the years. Bought the Fiskars maul three years ago. Buy the Fiskars. Current method is to stack a bunch of wood packed together and go to town on them from different angles. That thing is an amazing nut cracker. I've also used the little Fiskars hatchet for processing kindling and campfire wood for over 10 years. Buy one of those too. |

A couple of wedges for breaking big stuff into manageable size, then a good axe or splitting maul.
