I just got recalled

Just got home to find a letter recalling me from IRR to Active Duty. Has anyone else been through this that can tell me what to expect? I haven't gotten the full orders yet, but what I got has me reporting to Ft. Jackson on 5 Sept. for processing and then to Ft. Bliss for mobilization.

I am a 14S Avenger Crewmember. Since Iraq has no air threat I have this feeling I won't be doing that.

I got to do the IIR Duffle Bag Drag back in '91. Do they still send it in the form of a "MAIL GRAM" ? At the direction of the President, IAW Executive Oder #XXXXXXX ? Came close to not even opening mine. Thought it was junk mail.

Yep Western Union Mail Gram, and you are right, it doesn't look very official at all.

Include a oneway travel voucher as well ? That and the "MAIL GRAM" is all the orders you're gonna get until you get to Ft. Jackson, IIRC.

No voucher, just the mail gram. It says Complete orders, with additional instructions and personal guidance, will be delivered to you by the USPS. Then it says if I don't have them in 10 days to call this number they provide.

I got recalled in 2001, right after 9/11. I was already an individual reservist assigned to USSOCCENT so I knew it was coming. They called me on a friday after lunch and faxed orders to my local bank for me to pick up, they told me to report by Monday to Tampa. All the airports were pretty much closed and I had to drive the whole way so I left about 3am the next morning. It was pretty chaotic back then, no screening, etc. Just report with your uniforms, all your military records, including medical if you have them. You should also have your power of attorney, etc all ready to go. I took all my DCUs (had always been the SOCCENT UOD)and combat gear I had been issued and one set of Class A's(which I never wore). I also took my privately owned 45 and my own BUIS that I preferred. I'd pack well, if you forget anything you will probably have to buy it there, when I was recalled they would not allow recalled reservists to take leave-that may have changed now.

I hope they don't expect me to show up with anything, I've been out since 01 and don't have any uniform items that could be considered serviceable.

They will issue you everything, don't sweat that. Expect to get refresher training on all the basis, then go to wherever you mobilization station is......... IF you mobilize for overseas. Some IRR recalls have ended up doing stateside duty as well.

I saw some avengers over here the other day, I can't figure out WTF they would be doing..... I think someone loaded em on the wrong damm plane.

I got my orders today, my refresher training is at Bliss so they may very well have avengers pulling some sort of mission. In Kosovo we did border surveillence with them so it may be something similar. I will be kind of upset if I go through all of this and end up stateside lol, I don't know if it really means anything but my orders do specifically state mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

No you wont be doing that, you will more than likely be doing dismounted patrol's or convoy escort's or gaurding some compound. I would probaibly bet on the first two I listed anyway's I am here at Ft. Bliss and I can tell you get's hot all day long so be prepared for the heat while you are here.

It looks like the forecast for the next week here in DFW is worse than what ya'll are getting out there, should be a little better by the time we get there in mid September.

Just like omar said you will end up at Bigg's field that is where we both work at, the sad part is there ain't nothing over there, the main PX, commissary, clothing & sale's and everything else is over on main post, we do have a shoppet over on Bigg's but mothing specail look me up when you get here and if you have time we can hit the ROD&GUN club and go shoot.

The long range plan will have an exchange where the horse stables are presently located. I expect with 20,000 plus more soldiers relocating here that Biggs isn't going to look anything like what it does today.

XM here would rock.

Okay, you'd need a quite a bit of cooperation from the satcom folks. First, if I were me, I'd downlink the XM signal and plug the antenna not into a reciever but into a spare channel of a multiplexer. Send the downlinked signal over the .mil satcom link over to the desert, take the XM signal out of the demux and either 1. plug into your XM radio or 2. rebroadcast

This assumes complete cooperation at all links of the satcom network (really unobtainable unless you were on very good terms with just about everyone in the satcom link) and also assumes you have a paid up subscription to the XM radio (the idea above basically uses a satcom link in lieu of a 2,000 mile long antenna cable)

That being said, it is quite a pain in the ass. I will have to research the satellite radio options in the desert to see if something a bit more realistic can be tried and get back to you.
