Ranger (CV-61): Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on March 8 as “excess to naval requirements.” For disposal.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69): Scheduled to be redelivered to the Navy on Nov. 6 after a 3½ year refueling and comprehensive overhaul at Northrop Grumman Newport News, Va.

Submarines

Jimmy Carter (SSN-23): Scheduled to be delivered to the Navy and placed “In Commission, Full” on Dec. 8.

Parche (SSN-683): Scheduled to be placed “In Commission, In Reserve” by Sept. 30 at Bangor, Wash., for ultimate disposal through the Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Recycling Program.

Portsmouth (SSN-707): Scheduled to be placed “In Commission, In Reserve” by Sept. 30 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va., for ultimate disposal through the Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Recycling Program.

Houston (SSN-713): Completed refueling overhaul in June.

Salt Lake City (SSN-716): Scheduled to be deactivated and scrapped in fiscal 2006.

Ohio (SSBN-726): Reclassified as a nuclear-powered guided missile submarine (SSGN) in October 2002. The refueling and conversion work, being done at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., officially started Nov. 15, 2003, but the submarine has been in the yard since October 2003 for preliminary work. Conversion to SSGN will follow refueling.

Michigan (SSBN-727): Reclassified as an SSGN in October 2002. Entered Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for refueling and conversion to SSGN on Nov. 15, 2003. Placed “In Commission, In Reserve” on Feb. 7, 2004.

Florida (SSBN-728): Reclassified SSGN in January. Refueling and conversion work is being done at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Georgia (SSBN-729): Placed “In Commission, In Reserve” on Oct. 30, 2003. Reclassified SSGN in March. Refueling and conversion work is to be done at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Virginia (SSN-774): Delivered to the Navy on June 30 and placed “In Commission, Special.” Scheduled to be placed “In Commission, Full” on Oct. 23.

Texas (SSN-775): Launched July 31 and christened shortly after.

North Carolina (SSN-777): Keel laid May 22 at General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Conn.

USNS Flickertail State (TACS-5): Activated and placed “in service” Feb. 5. Placed “out of service” March 6, and placed “in service” the next day for use by the Marine Corps in Haiti. Placed “out of service” March 13. Laid up at the Maritime Administration Reserve Fleet at James River, Va.

Coronado (AGF-11): Decommissioned Nov. 14, 2003, at Point Loma, Calif., and transferred to Military Sealift Command as USNS Coronado (TAGF-11), in a reduced operating status for an overhaul. Returned to the Navy on Feb. 18 after completion of overhaul and recommissioned on the same date as USS Coronado (AGF-11).

Manitou (WPB-1302): Decommis-sioned July 14 for modernization. Replaces Matinicus (WPB-1315) in the modernization contract. Originally, the entire Island class of WPBs was to be decommissioned for modernization. However, the first batch was found to be in poor material condition. The Coast Guard is now considering modernizing only the nine ships that were awarded under the original contract of June 25, 2002.

Matagorda (WPB-1303): Redelivered to the Coast Guard on March 1. Recommissioned April 14

Maui (WPB-1304): Deployed to the northern Persian Gulf on July 3.

Monhegan (WPB-1305): Decommis-sioned June 7 for modernization.

You forgot that VP-64 is now VR-64.  We went from P-3's to C-130's this month it is official.

There is a typo up there, the Obannon not the Thorn is DD-987.

To those who have visited this web page in the past: We will be closing this web page because of the change of plans that the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum has made. Because of the ever-increasing cost of our efforts to obtain the ex-USS Charles F. Adams DD-2, we have decided to change our focus. We will now concentrate our efforts to bring the ex-USS Edson, DD-946 to Bay City, Michigan. This will be a living museum to commemorate the destroyer's sailors and the rich shipbuilding past of Bay City. We understand and realize that there will be people that will be unhappy with us for switching ships, but this is strictly a business decision. The cost of Edson vs. the cost of Adams was the main reason for this change. We will save around $1.5 to $2 million by changing ships.
