It was a bit rough in '89 as well.

I had a lot of fun there in 1990.

Fort Dix, NJ was the worst.

Gonzo Station, North Arabian Sea, 1981,82,83,84,  USS Midway CV-41....A very old carrier sitting off the coast in the heat, flying 24/7,  waiting for the politicians to make up their fucking minds to do something.  A close second would be the port of Fuajirah, UAE last year driving patrol boats. heat, sand, shitty command staff and about the only good thing about heat was that it was too hot for bugs to live.

Ft. Dix is without a doubt the most broke dick post I've ever spent time on. The absolute worst chow I've ever eaten. It's only saving grace is it's proximity to the shore, NYC, and other cultural attractions.

Camp Olins, Belgum wasn't a bad place, but absoutly nothing to do. The Flemmish do not eat eggs for breakfast, and it took a great deal of pursuation, (i.e. direct threats), to get them to make them for us.

My house/home is in Cleveland and it's not bad there.  FWIW, I lived in Chicago prior to that.

I also spent two years as an Infantryman in Panama and you learn to tolerate the heat, bugs, rotting vegetation smell, etc.

Bali Doogle Somalia gets my vote for worst place I've been.  This was in 1985.

LOL, I can top that! How about a bilge level storeroom off the engineroom of a flat bottom LST rocking and rolling with nasty smelling bilge water sloshing around,  paint brush in hand, while leaving the rivers and hitting the high seas off Vietnam! The first and only time I ever got seasick. I think they sent me down there to get a laugh, but I fooled them, I spent the rest of the day in my rack while they worked!

It's a toss up between Wrightstown, NJ, and Mogadishu. (Inside joke for those who served sentences at McGuire/Ft Dix).

I was a C-141 FE in the '86-'89 time frame.  We made a stop at Mogadishu to drop some stuff off.  Doing my walk-around after landing, I discovered that one of the upper spoiler panels was stuck in the ground position.  Taking a closer look, the drive quadrant had shattered.  Not good.

The AC asked is we wanted to call for a mainetnance team to be flown in and go into crew rest.  We looked around and told him we were definitely NOT staying.  I borrowed a drill from the guy who maintained our embassy airplane and we bolted the offending spoiler down.  It was a lot of work under that hot sun, but well worth it.

I almost said that I was in Mogadishu before it got bad, but it's always been bad there.
