And somewhere along the line, 3 people in my squad of 10 got the night off (along with the one that injured himself last night). All the absences happen to be in my beat district which leaves 2 for an area normally covered by 6...gonna be fun!

ended the night with a great fight, OC spray, pickpocket got smashed by the guy he picked...

Just a little FYI and reminder for us Halloween shifters.

Lastnight a few cities over, they had a group yutes dressed in various costumes, going around robbing folks at gun point. Apparently there were some shots fired and the popo recovered spent 7.62x39 casings. One yute was described as open carrying an AK.

Things arent always as they appear.....................both ways.

Starting at 1730 hrs tonight, working 5 hrs of reverse shift extension til 2230hrs. Roll call for regular shift at 2240 hrs, end of shift at 0710hrs. 14 hrs total with shift extension, regular shift and 1 hr for daylight savings time. Last night was dead, hoping for the same tonight.

No, fuck that. Halloween is the one holiday/event that I do everything I can to avoid working. My 3rd year on the street, I came within about 1/8" of shooting a teenager who thought swinging a real but dull machete at me would be a good idea because he thought I was a trickertreater. Stupid little peckerhead.

Not me. the first Halloween at home in years. I even decorated my patrol car to celebrate... Instead it was me and the wife spending a nice night at home handing out candy... I decided I did not need the overtime that bad. I did have the range all morning though. We were doing patrol rifle quals and I finally finished my last group around 1500... a good day in my books...

Pretty slow night, all things considered. No crazy calls or anything like halloweens in the past. I did however get to break up an internet fueled rave out in the middle of the woods....probably over 100 people, but mostly 35+ year old crowd. Had a very expensive sound system on some old hippies lavender farm

We were kinda slow out the gates then around 0130 things really picked up with all the bars letting out. At 0330 had a burglary in progress. Found the guy in the living room. Punched through the front door window to his ex g/f's house. Corrections wouldn't admit him til he got med treatment for his cut up hand. So we sat at the hospital for 2.5 hrs till he got sewn up. And the topper to it all, our major crimes detectives said to just book him for Crim Trespass and DOP

NOT BURGLARY or DV DOP. We finished shortly after 0700.

I would rather work every New Years and 4th of July for the next 5 years than have a shift like the one I just finished. One of the worst holiday shifts I have ever worked (DV with a knife - 1/2 a second from a shooting, 2 rollover DUI accidents, 2 felony assaults and about 3 dozen drunken fight disturbances). I put 400 miles on my car in 13 hours.

Thats 3500.

10-8 means "in service," which I suspect is the same for you, but for us 10-41 means "coffee break," while 10-42 means "taking a shit."

For a comparison of how different they can be, see below for a side by side of N.O.P.D. versus my old dept. in MS, with N.O.P.D. in the clear, and the old dept. in parentheses:

10-42: Bathroom break (officer needs emergency assistance)
10-55: Officer needs emergency assistance (change to channel __)
10-99: Change to channel __ (officer needs emergency assistance, life in danger)

And just as a tidbit, when I started in NOLA, every day at noon we in the 5th district would switch from sharing channel 4 with the 4th to using channel 5 by ourselves......................so at noon I would hear "headquarters to all 5th district units; 10-99 channel 5." Given my time at my old dept. in MS, my brain would hear "all units, 10-99," and the adrenaline would get going pretty darn good right there.

As a further aside and example of why clear talk is really a good thing, here's a comparison of a couple high priority calls that are different between NOLA and every surrounding agency, listing the call, followed by the N.O.P.D. signal/code in the clear, everyone else around us in parentheses:

Officer needs emergency assistance: 10-55 (signal 108)
Officer needs emergency assistance, life in danger: signal 108 (code red)

It does make a difference––––a neighboring agency puts out a 108, and if our unit hear it they roll balls to the wall––while a neighboring agency that hears us put out a 108 may not even roll, thinking it not serious enough to warrant crossing into our city. When we should be ignoring their 108, and they should roll on ours, since they are different things.

Jefferson Parish S.O. Code Red

And to them 108 means you're in a fistfight.

N.O.P.D. 108

And to us code red doesn't mean anything at all unless you take the time to study surrounding agencies (which few enough do these days.)

Sorry for the maudlin post, but it has been a very long weekend, far longer than I had thought it would be, to include a good friend put in the hospital with pancreatitis and near liver failure from drinking, and another with a BP of 190 over 90 who is refusing to either go to the hospital or let me and the missus take him. So anything that might be life-saving is looking even better than normal to me right now, and I am a firm believer in clear talk as a possibly life-saving idea (I challenge the reader to find a first responder who lived through Katrina who will differ with me in this.)

1900-0700 here. Pretty quiet night until 2230 when I had a drunk try to back into a driveway and pass out, which then sent him barreling through a yard in reverse and striking a porch. Talk about being in the right place at the right time, I watched it all go down

On a positive note the wife brought the munchkins in to see me, so they got to play in the patrol car. Then one of the firefighters let them go play in the trucks. Good night for the kids at least.

It makes for interesting police work. I work an alcohol fueled 10000+ person costume ball every year where the two most popular costumes are devils and cops. The cocky drunk crowd is especially fond of cop costumes. Fun times trying to break up fistfights and respond to calls when people think you are in costume. Some people had really bad nights over the years thinking we were in costume.

Worked a 10hr shift with 6 hours OT

-Traffic was insane!
-Got in a scrap with a drunk piece of shit.
-Attempt to Elude, vehicle.
-Rollover Crash at 3:15A 45 miles from me as I was heading home.

Went on at 5P and got off at 8A

By far the busiest I've had.

ETA: I did get to see my 2 girls trick or treating briefly though, Supergirl and Little bo peep. Made my night!!
