"You are to professional. Not rude or disrespectful, just a little to professional. How about adding, have a nice day at the end of the traffic stop?"

First off what does "to professional" mean? Secondly if you are a motorist and just received a $150 citation for doing 20+ over do you really want the officer to say "have a nice day"?

So how do you end the traffic stop?

They would always ask if they were free to leave after I explain the ticket to them so now I just say, "you're free to go/leave."

I say "have a nice day" if they got a warning. I say "drive safe" if they got a ticket. I may start saying "be careful pulling back into traffic" just to mix things up.

From a motorists perspective "Please drive safely" is even more condescending than "Have a nice day"

The motorist is going to feel royally screwed if you ticket them. And if you cut them a break, they are going to be happy no matter what you say.

In Wichita last month, I got nailed in one of their speed traps on Kellog. The officer signed off with "You gotta slow down here, we are out here all the time"
I thought that was pretty good. Makes it sound like he regrets having to take your money, and is offering some good advice.

Most of the time I almost always reduce the speed to lower the ticket and I tell them that. I also will usually only write one violation and give warnings for everything else....most people thank me and tell me to be safe.

If they are nice and tell me to have a good night, I reciprocate with the same response.

I say something like... "Sorry we had to meet under these circumstances..."

I personally NEVER say anything like "have a nice day" after I cite someone.

Sounds like someone just got a performance review.

They always need to find something to suggest to 'improve' your performance.

"Have a nice day", after I just got a ticket would not make me happy, "Please drive safely" isn't too awful, "Please watch your speed" wouldn't be too bad either.

If the stop ended in a citation, I usually said, "Drive careful." If it it resulted in a warning, "Have a nice day."

A friend got in trouble for telling people to have a nice day. Got complained on. So he adopted the phrase, "Have a blessed day." Few weeks into that, who'd he pull over? A wiccan chick. A practicing, honest-to-Vishnu, calls herself a witch. He told her to "Have a blessed day."

Instant complaint. I think he's down to "Take care." now.

I <3 Kellogg, and yes WPD is always there. I have ridden with my buddy that was in traffic numerous times where we sat and ran radar and called it in for the 4-5 officers a quarter mile down the road.

Warning- have a good night and be careful , then I check traffic and let them know when it is safe to enter the roadway. Ticket- you be careful or ya'll be careful tonight and I let them know when it is clear to enter the roadway. Sometimes they hesitate to pull back onto the roadway, so I shut everything off except my rear deck lights so they can see it is safe. I am always courteous even when dealing with a shithead. The nastier they get the sweeter I get. I've been known to call a dude sweetheart.
