Ok this has had me laughing all day...
(due to the nature of this event, no names or addresses will be used)
So i'm on patrol last night, came in at 0200 hours due to working 18 straight hours the day before, and at about 0230 hours my partner and I are leaving the department when we hear an audible alarm.  The alarm is faint but is loud enough that we know it is coming from one of our local business's.  I run in the squad room and look at the CAD Screen.  I see an call for service for an alarm at a local business about 4 blocks away.  i tell me partner about it and we head out as fast as we can, this is a fresh alarm, just started.
My partner and i get on scene at the same time that dispatch sends out the call.  We tell them we are on scene and we see a shattered front window door.  After clearing the building we follow the trail of dropped merchandise and foot prints directly up to the front door of one of our known gang bangers and thieves.  Mind you we know the subject is at home because we watched him peeking out his window as we arrived.
After some negotiations we are able to get permission to go in the house with the parent and search the house for him and him only.  During the search for him we find all the stolen property sitting on the floor in his bedroom.  We locate him and his partner hiding in a closet and take them into custody on suspicion of Burglary, Theft and Mal Mis.
As i'm walking one of the guys out the door he tells me, "Your stupid, your department is stupid and i'm smarter than you.  You don't have anything on me."
Ok so lets break this down.
1.  We have you on video... But your smarter than us.

2.  There is a trail of stolen property leading to your house... But your smarter than us.

3.  You are hiding in your house from us... But your smarter than us.

4.  While trying to find you we see in plain view the stolen merchandise in your room... But your smarter than us.

.

.

.

Tell me again how your smarter than us???

I really wonder at what point did these brain children think to themselves, "CRAP WE REALLY DIDN'T THINK THIS ONE OUT DID WE???"
So remember, the moral of this story is this... "They" are smarter than us.
LOL.
Be safe out there guys and gals.

Many times.

Reminds me of the burglary where the thief stole the victim's porn stash (and it was extensive.)  As I check the point of entry (back door,) I notice a naughty DVD on the ground a few feet away.  A little past that one, another.  Then another couple, and so on and so forth until the house of a known thief.  Yes.  He left a trail of porn from a hole in the huge garbage bag he used to haul his loot away in, like some sort of perverted reverse Santa.

While I was on FTO we popped an active burglary in our very small town.  Catch two kids in the place (owners son, and one of the waitresses sons) front door is locked, once we got them in custody I patted mine down quick for weapons.  Turns out the "pot o gold" machine out front had been busted  and a bunch of change was on the floor.  I noted when I patted the kid down that he had a pocket FULL of quarters.

So anyhow, we ask the kids what happened.  Turns out they were across the street at their friends house when they seen a guy in the restaurant so they came over to scare him away.  He ran out the front door.  The perps description is a 7'0" black dude wearing a hooded sweatshirt (now, this is small town usa...not to be racist, but well...there aren't any black people).  We inform them that the front door is locked "oh, we locked it when he ran out"

That's when my partner mentioned the broken machine, I hadn't seen it.  One of them said something about that guy taking the money and I looked at my kid and go "oh, like the wad of quarters in your pocket?" Man the sprinklers came on then.

They ended up admitting to the whole thing.

They ended up commiting a felony over $35.XX and a partial 12 pack of beer.  Of course, mommy didn't want to press charges though.

About 10 months later the same place got burglarized...no signs of forced entry.

If they are, or are not smarter than us is irrelevant.  All that matters is, in the end they sit behind bars, we dont.

Not to be nit-picky, but it is "than" not "then"...

Where I work, we would term those two kids "Job Security"
