What is everyone carrying in 5.56

I Need to find a new duty round. We are carrying 193. We will be shooting it out of a 16" Bushy Patrolman's carbine

What's your operating environment?

Federal 62gr bonded soft points is good for general use and especially good against vehicles and the like.

For entry use the Hornady TAP 75gr is better for good terminal performance while minimizing penetration. Some rifles (especially shorter barrels) with 1:9 twist have trouble with this round, particularly in cold weather or at longer range.

We use TAP 55 gr. but will be switching to the 75 gr. this next budget.

You are using a Bushmaster so I take it that you have a 1/9 barrel. Some 1/9 barrels run the 75 gr. just fine but others do not. You will know if your gun likes it if it shoots accuratly with the 75 gr. If you want to go with TAP then get a box of the 75 gr. and go out and shoot it and see how it groups for you. If your groups look like crap compaired to what you are using now then I recommend the 60 gr. TAP. Your 1/9 should love the 60 gr.

55gr Federal Tactical bonded (i think they are the bonded ones) soft point. Its dept mandated, if it was up to me I would likely go with one of the TAP rounds.

This is what I was looking at... I figure it would offer some good performance against intermediate barriers

I work in the rural northeast. Mostly wooded , but we do have some agricultural areas...

ETA.. the rifles are just drawn from the safe before shift and not assigned and zeroed to one specific officer. They are iron sighted.

I could potentially see barricaded subject in a home or vehicle, perhaps a dismounted wooded engagement.
I cant see myself attempting, and certainly not teaching a 150 -200 rd shot.....
100 yds is the max distance for qual. and that is more to show them what they are or ARE NOT capable of with the carbine.

My dept goes with 69 gr Federal Gold match BTHP for the Bureau of Special Operations(SWAT) and Federal 55 gr TRU for the Emergency Services Bureau guys. As a medic I go with Pakistani EMT Shears.

County guys get the Speer 64 grain Gold Dot. State guys are getting 55 grain PSP in the green and yellow box (Remington).

If I could choose, it would be Fed Tactical Bonded 62gr. We currently issue Win Ranger 64gr SP.

Does anyone have more info on the PA shooting analyzed by FBI and distributed in Powerpoint or PDF form? FBI sez TAP didn't perform as well as they expected. No detail on why they came to that conclusion.

Yea, the TAP 55gr didn't perform as expected. The 62gr and 75gr are good to go.

We are issued 69 gr. Federal Gold Medal. It's a decent round for the M4geries that have 1/7-1/9 barrels, but not so good for the few guys with M16A1's with the 1/12 barrel. If I had my choice it would be 62 grain Federal bonded. The problem I have noted with the GM is that, since it is a match round, it is not heavily crimped and the bullet tends to set back easily.

Have done TAP, Federal Bonded, 193, etc, etc, etc. 55gr FMJ now in Win. Q3131. $$$$ and availability is more the issue these days. BTW, FMJ has been doing the deed for a long time, and will continue to do so. Remember, its not so much about the equipment, but the skill of the operator.

If you ever have to shoot through a barrier (windshield glass, etc), you'll wish you had a bonded round. Federal's Tactical Bonded rounds are top notch.

Dallas issues/requires approved ammo. So far the only approved ammo is the Winchester Ranger 55gr BST....appears to be the same they market as their 55gr BST Varmint round. We had a shoot out in West Dallas that claimed an officer's life and the ammo did not perform well as responding officer's returned fired. Suspect lived and was convicted during trial but among the rank and file there's definately a loss of faith in the rounds capabilities. I wish we had other options but according to after actions reports and a memo sent out by the Firearms Training Center's Sgt, the rounds were not at fault. Who knows, but I'd rather have M855 than a round marketed for varmints.
