(BCN) A veteran California Highway Patrol lieutenant was killed late Saturday night in the Santa Cruz Mountains after being struck by a car on state Highway 17, according to CHP Sgt. Wayne Ziese.

Around 10 p.m. on Saturday, 47-year-old CHP Lt. Michael Walker of Vacaville was driving southbound on state Highway 17 just south of Glenwood Avenue in response to a spun-out vehicle that was stuck in the mud on the side of the highway, Ziese said.

A California Department of Transportation worker also arrived at the scene to assist Walker, according to Ziese.

Both Walker and the Caltrans worker were standing outside of their vehicles when 31-year-old Boulder Creek resident Jerry Morris Blankenberg apparently lost control of his 2000 Audi and slammed his car into the back of the Caltrans truck, Ziese said.

The force at which Blankenberg hit the Caltrans truck was strong enough to push it forward, subsequently hitting Walker and the Caltrans worker, according to Ziese.

Walker, Blankenberg and the Caltrans worker were all transported to Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, where both Walker and Blankenberg succumbed to their injuries, Ziese said.

"The impact inflicted what turned out to be fatal injuries," Ziese said.

The Caltrans worker reportedly suffered broken legs in the accident, Ziese said.

Walker, a 24-year CHP veteran, leaves behind his wife and two daughters, ages 7 and 9, according to Ziese.

He was born and raised in San Francisco, and previously worked for the CHP in Contra Costa County and San Francisco.

"He was a family man ... a guy who cared about his community,” Ziese said. "He was loved by the people he was responsible for."

Walker's brother Bob Walker is also a Bay Area CHP officer, Ziese said

Once again proving that traffic is more fatal than gunfire to most of us.

RIP Brother Walker.
