This is what we do at our PD for retirements (could easily do it with a promotion in the FD etc) but we take a long sleeve shirt sleeve with dept patch, rank markings, longevity markings etc and have just the sleeve matted and framed in a nice frame. Engraved tag with Officers info, years of service and special unit info on it. Usually have dept award ribbons mounted in the upper left corner of the mat too.

Not sure where our Chief gets em done (I'm guess at a local trophy type shop) but they always look very classy and are one of the more unique gifts that I have seen over my career.

edit: disregard just saw that you want something practical to use on the job.

Is at an admin spot?

Put a small engraved plaque on a nice ergonomic keyboard or swivel chair “from the guys in —— shift etc....”

If it’s a particularly tight crew a framed shift photo is always nice.

A nice engraved pocket knife or multi tool if you want something useful.

A pie in the face and then a bucket of ice water after he gets cleaned up. Our department wants you to go up remembering where you came from.

Typically, your captain or chief presents a new shield or helmet on promotion. A paramedic preceptor passes down a patch when you pass. A firm manly handshake as well. We try not to get too leg humpy about it.

If it is an admin gig, and he has a sense of humor, go for the hemorrhoid donut!  And maybe a real gift under it.

Yes a promotion to battalion Chief. I'm leaning towards a knife as he has been eyeing a new one..
