A buddy of mine just graduated the academy recently at like 35 years old. I wanted to get him something he would use and appreciate without spending a fortune. He doesn't drink, makes his own knives and owns a gun shop, so my usual ideas are out. So far I'm leaning towards tactical style pen but open to suggestions.

thanks!

Ten years later I still carry daily a Strider SNG folder and a basic Cross pen that were academy graduation gifts. A single cell (123a) pocket sized flashlight would also be nice. I carry a 5+ year old Surefire Backup, but I'm sure there are better options now.

If he owns a gun shop that a lot tougher to get a good gift only because he has access to a lot of good gear.

Maybe a gift cert to a good restaurant would be better or a nice tactical pen that take refillable ink cartage

I use my Matthew Martin copper pen everyday.
It wasn't cheap but it was worth it.

I recently bought two as gifts for coworkers.

I graduated from the police academy in 1980.  Was hired on in 79.  My mother gave me a, I think it’s called, a knee board.  My dad was a pilot in the Army and he used it to copy frequencies, coordinates, etc.  My mom saw my dads and got me one.  It helped a lot during my rookie years.  Write addresses, lookouts, notes, etc on the paper part.  Uses Velcro to attach to your leg.  Easy off, easy on.  Used for one year, done after that.  It was damn nice that first year.  After that, you get pretty ingrained with the same repetitive addresses. Had more of a problem keeping up with girlfriends after that.  To be honest, doesn’t need to be anything big.  I found that the OCGA book that was sold at the ga public training center in Forsyth was pretty informative.  20 bucks.  I treasured that.  I never trashed one for an update.

thanks for the suggestions all! I ended up going with a Boker G10 tactical pen for him. It got good reviews and is supposed to hold up to near anything. He got it last night and seemed to really like it!

thanks again
