I’ll modify my response a bit ... LEOSA has certain standards that departments and officers have to meet. The article highlights examples where they are not being met. People and departments playing games as highlighted in the article are not what LEOSA was intended for. Michigan passed a law controlling departments and qualifications for being an officer. I’d rather have more states do that than get the feds involved.

The problem here isn't HR 218. The problem is corrupt locals. I don't think active duty reserves, in most locals, can carry off duty even if they do their minimum hours of ride-along.

I think this is a case of fake news. Yes, Blooming Idiot wants everyone to give up their guns, but the first thing I saw wrong with the article is it sounds like felons carrying guns which is against federal law.

Getting on airplanes wearing guns? Maybe a private plane. You can’t just carry a gun on a plane cause you’re commissioned and have a badge unless you’re a Fed. And Segal.....I know that he was a reserve deputy in a Louisiana Parrish. He even made a short lived series about it, but I’ve never heard anything about him in Michigan. Maybe he got him mixed up with Ted Nugent who is commissioned in that neck of the woods.

Hell, his buddy Richie "Shortshanks" Daley carried before IL got CCW due to the Mayor of many towns in IL being able to be a "Conservator Of the Peace" under ordinance. He went on TV after 218's passage complaining bitterly, vowing to ignore it and threatened to arrest out-of-state cops because there was "no way to verify their identity".

In a classic display of politics =/= policing, most (if not all) of the street level cops and supervisors continued their policy of "don't be a d*ck, don't get dragged in" for visitors. I don't think a single cop was ever charged.

Back in the 80's we had a guy get popped in our state for UUW (CCW) - he produced a "special reserve" badge, but his name came back as a hit on NCIC.

He was a felon, but had made the requisite contribution to a C(r)ook County (D), and was just enjoying the benefit of doing so.

That prompted an update in the police training act here.

While I oppose the idea of badge mills, they came about largely because of laws like NYC that deny the right of self defense to "little people" and yet make LE a special caste.

Or, as you say, corrupt locals.

In my state, as long as the Chief of their department approves it and issues appropriate ID, it’s allowed.
