How much does your department give you annually each your for your 'uniform allotment/allowance'?

Also, how big is your department?
What is the population of the town/city within your department's 'jurisdiction'?

I am trying to find out this information so we can hopefully start getting more money. My department had 15 full time Officers which covers a town with the pop. of approximately 8,000 people.  After taxes, our annual allotment is about $690. Compared to others in the county, we are almost the lowest.

About 10 times your size. No uniform allotment, but all uniforms and equipment are provided by the agency, and replaced by Supply when they become unservicable or worn to the point where they don't present a professional appearance. Uniform tailoring, alterations, repair and dry cleaning is paid for by the agency.

My department provides $530 a year.  I spent about $1,100 my first year after duty belt, boots, class B uniform, jumpsuits etc.

We have a grooming standard so haircuts, t-shirts, socks, dry cleaning and clothing maint. are at individual officer expence.  

We have approx. 22,000 sworn officers in the dept.  We are a state wide agency.

The department that I work for now supplies everything except boots.  The uniform, nylon gear and dry cleaning are all paid for by the department.

The department I used to work for had a different setup.  Each officer is given a purchasing card (Mastercard).  The officer is responsible for purchasing new uniforms when needed, though the dept would schedule 4 or 5 different times during the year when the uniform reps would actually come to the department and measure / take orders.  The officer also purchased necessary duty belt items.  The dry cleaning was paid for using the credit card.  All receipts were kept and filed at the department.  Each month the officer was required to reconcile his statement with receipts.  The clothing allowance was $1,000 per year.  In short, the 1K covered uniforms, dry cleaning, duty gear that needed replacing, boots, coolmax t-shirts, athletic shoes (trying to facilitate healthier lifestyles) and a few other smaller items that I can' bring to mind right now.  All in all, it was a great deal.

The credit card was also used for travel, training and misc purchases.  All purchases had to be justified with a receipt.  The actual limit on the card was $15,000.

The dept provides, 1 26" baton, 1 pair chain handcuffs, 1 set disposable ear plugs, 1 CPR mask and 1 way valve.

Other than that each person is responsible for providing their own uniforms, and personal equipment.

1000 bucks a year (500-600 after taxes), Basically you have to buy everything.  They gave me my gun and my shield.  I still needed to buy the holster and the pin for the shield. [:(].

Edited to add, I think were around 35,000 strong.  Down from over 40,000 only a few years ago and I think our numbers are still dropping.

The SO supplies $500 yearly. Can be used for clothing, boots, gear, dry cleaning ect. If anyone hasn't used their alotment, I've seen others sponge it up here in June. However there is usually not much left at todays prices.

Thanks for the info guys/gals. My PD supplies everything from head to toe when you are first hired on, minus the $45 compaign cover badge. Of course, they only allow $75 for boots, so I had to fork out the extra change for my Danner Acadias. We recently were given the option to wear nylon gear for the street, but still have to keep leather duty gear for the dress uniform come court time or inspection time. Nylon gear ran me about $375 for my setup, including the $100 holster required to be used. I also now carry an HK USP40 rather than the crappy S&W 4006 the dept issued, so there was $600 just for the HK. So far this year, I have spent about $1500; so about $800 out of my pocket and it is only June!

This is what really ticks me off: My PD recently mandated that all Officers STOP wearing pin on badges and pin on nameplates on our street uniforms (Blauer Street Gear). We all went to sewn on subdued patches, great little improvement!!! I love it. However, the Officers had to buy the patches!!! I threw a fit, the PD tells me I have to switch and then makes me pay for it?!?! True, it really did not cost all that much, but when I had to buy patches for 8 tops, it was a two month membership to the gym! Admittedly, I am a gearhead junkie. I love all the little cool tools, knives, flashlites, etc. My car is decked out with my own lights, equipment, and accessories (I just put on center caps yesterday!) so I guess I shouldnt complain.......that much. Plus I spend about $300 a year membership to the gym and $1000 on suppliments annually to stay fit and healthy!!!!

Of course, some Officers on my PD dont even spend the check for equipment uniforms, they just pocket it all and the dept doesnt care. They wear nasty old worn out clothes and equipment and have more in their pocket than me!!!

Anyways, sorry for my rant. Keep the info coming about how much your PD gives you, I appreciate it. I am trying to collect as much info as possible to present to the commission board this summer.

$900/yr., 27 sworn, city pd with population of 11,000.  PD provides all initial issue of uniforms, boots, Beretta 92F, baton, cuffs, spray, leather gear, etc. Uniforms are officer's responsiblity to keep up with the 900 smackers.  Safety gear that gets worn out is replaced by PD.  Dry cleaning is on your own.

21 sworn, down from 25, though.  18k pop, small universty town in west central IL.  The area of the country will have a lot to do with money figures.  the Board may bring that up if you float them high figures.  just keep it in mind.

we get $450 for uniforms and $250 for cleaning.  none of it is taxed.  i'm surprised to read that others are paying tax.  don't ask me to explain why we don't pay taxes on it.

when we get hired the PD buys everything 'cept your weapon.  the PD tried to chince a little and not get me a pair of cuffs since i had some from my previous job.  I told them "hey i'm going to thirds right, shouldn't i have two pair?"...F'ing dayshifters...

We get a voucher for uniforms, boots and equipment. Uniforms and boots can be replaced every year. Equipment is replaced every 3 years, with vests every 5. Dept issued firearm is Beretta 96G.

TAC and Specialist team same as above.

Twp PD, 25 man dept, 15,000 residents. when first hired, everything is paid for. after that, $800.00 a year. A new vest is bought by dept every 5 years, this does not come out of allowance...

SO  about 370 sworn... pop roughly 250k

Full time : Initial allowance 800 bucks plus gun/ mags/ badge/vest ( patrol only)   annual 500

Reserve: nothing up front ( except gun and badge)...  300 /yr if all requirements are met

so out of pocket..... about a grand

600+ sworn, city of 330,000.  During rookie school they give you most of the basics.  Four each trousers, short/long sleeve shirts, coat, sidearm, leather, Second Chance Vest, etc. to get you up to regulation. No allowance for six months so anything else you want is on you, stinger, level 3 holster, etc.

After that we get 450 a year for whatever.  Adds up quick.  three pair pants, three long sleeves, and two short sleeves pretty well wiped me out this last year.  A Riot helmet and a gortex rain jacket and a couple pair of boots pretty well wiped me the year before.
Our uniforms are fairly rugged and will last as long as you don't get fat and need new ones.  Ideally, that should not be a problem, but shit happens.  People get fat.  I hit the protien and iron pretty hard and packed on 20 #'s.  A little more than I wanted to with a 5'9" frame, and had to trade in shirts with the quartermaster.  With SWAT tryouts coming up I am trying to strip some of it back off for obvious reasons.
I could easily spend 1000 a year on clothing and gizmos.
Plus, we can turn in recipts for non contract items like court clothes if you want them, (I always go in class A's), and socks, underarmour, thermals, socks, etc.
Our vests are replaced every five with no deduction, but if you want to upgrade to the Monarch, the difference comes out of pocket or out of allowance.

$400 a year, I mostly spend it on other stuff like toys.

If I need a new uniform article i just go out and buy it. The amount I get will cover about 5 full uniforms, of the cheaper quality, a year.

Yes,  we get a uniform allowance.  It's so small I have no idea how much a month it is.  On the bright side,  Austin has a centralized uniform supply dept,  all the uniforms from police, fire, and places like the gas dept.
Take them the old,  get something new. They even tailor.

Basic isue is pretty generous  (We even get shorts) You are going to supply your weapon, mags, and holster, as well as an nonstandard items such as hinge cuffs in place of the issued chain cuffs, Stinger flashlights, etc.  boots are officer purchase, vests are replaced every 5 years.

There is talk of a one time weapons purchase allowance for cadets.

~60 sworn, city of ~22,000.  We are issued everything with one exception.  If we want to wear boots, instead of the clorino shoes, we have to buy them ourselves.  They are really good about replacing damaged/worn out gear.

40 person agency, supporting a daytime population of nearly 30,000.  Current staffing is 21 on the street.

Initial hires get two short sleeve uniforms, two pr pants, a outter belt, and inner belt, a baton with carrier, and a pair of handcuffs with carrier.  They will issue you a weapon for your first year, but then you have to buy one.

$550/yr.  If you are hire July-Jan, you only get one uniform allowance your first yer, if Jan-July you get two, just due to messed up policies currently in place.  

Most agencies in this state either issue 80%+ of your gear or require you to do it without reibursement.  Uniform allowences are becoming a thing of the past...

City Department with 49 sworn officers.  Population about 36,000.

We provide everything for initial issue.  That includes duty belt & accessories, gun, coats, boots, shoes, 5 shirts, 3 pants.

Officers get $650 anually in credit at a local uniform shop (to avoid having to pay taxes on it).  Officers can use that $650 to buy just about anything police related that they may need.

4000 officers.

We get $500 a year, all uniforms, (including socks!!) weapons and shoes are provided by the dept.  We just have to pay for the dry cleaning.

City of Bangor,Maine (pop. 34,000) (approx. 65 sworn.)

All equipment and clothing supplied,(annual
footwear stipend added approx. $200.00.)
Includes weapon, cuffs and other duty gear.
Other items such as collaspable baton, others types of additional handcuffs (ect.) may be carried we prior approval.(provided by the
each officer who wishes to do so.)
Also other personal items of reasonable cost and type are covered by the dept.(ie. watches
((Not ROLEX's)) and watchbands, sunglasses(again cheapies here about $30.00 max),
damaged in the line of duty are usually
re-imbursed.
