When I first started, we were on 8 hr days. I worked 2000-0400 and it was awesome. Then our Union voted for and got 12 hr. shifts approved. I worked 1900-0700 for the first couple of years, now I am on 1500-0300. Hopefully, on to a better shift like 0900-2100 or 1100-2300 in a couple of years. The advantage to our 12 hr. shifts is that we are guaranteed every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. Back when we were on 8 hr. shifts, you were lucky to see a weekend off every month and a half to two months. It doesn't totally suck, there are some 8 hr. short shifts sprinkled in (2-4 a month) to maintain the same amount of hours per pay period. I will say that Summers are busy and time flies, however, Winters are slow and grueling. I can't speak for a jail setting, but on the road we pass the time with traffic stops, walk-throughs of apartment buildings, pulling doors on businesses, etc. Oh, and I don't drink coffee, either...
