Hello, I just got assigned to 12 hour graveyards in a jail and was wondering what others in similar occupations and shifts do to stay awake and occupied.

What's your sleep schedule on days off?

5p-5a on the road though.
Answering calls or hunting for trouble keeps you awake.
On my days off I keep the same schedule best I can with training, court, etc

6P to 6A

It can be rough on slow nights, but staying pro active is key.

In a corrections setting, if your into working out, bring in some free weights and work your self to failure. Pushups. Pullups. Use the time like the convicts do...train your body.

Coffee is great...during winter months.

Monster (white, zero sugar, carbs, etc) all the time...

Green Stinger ECA stack tablets... get them from i-supplements.com or from ephedra-warehouse.com

Take one with a monster at beginning of shift and ROCK OUT.

I used to smoke...it sucked.

Vape?

I dunno bro, I know that it can get boring, but it will really be up to your department SOP what you can and cannot do while on the clock...

Good luck!

Dick jokes. Hopefully you have someone to tell them to.

I worked 1800-0600 11 or so years ago in the jail.  It was the most god awful time of my career.  The stench of foot & ass jail casserole for 12 hours, plus shear boredom was terrible.  It wasn't too bad in booking, but working the floor in the pods sucked.

When on nights I cover the bedroom windows with HEAVY black plastic on the inside.  I use painter's tape to adhear it to the drywall.   My room is DARK.    I slow drip sodas for caffeine.

7-7 here

Download lots and lots of movies/shows. Watch them over the course of the night. Get some snacks like pretzels/peanuts/cheezypoofs (not really) or something not terrible for you.

Surf arfcom like a boss. Lurk the 365 thread.

Joke with the guys

I try to stay away from energy drinks.  Slow nights are the worst.

Stay active. Eating small snacks helps me stay awake. Talking with people helps too. FIs if they are legitimate or going and BSing with dispatch helps me. Getting into a sleep routine is very important. Black out your bedroom or where ever you sleep. I have thought about blacking out my bathroom if I have to get up during my sleep because it wake me up and I wont be able to go back to bed. Foot patrol helps too if you can do that.

1800-0600 Dispatch, Just got off shift for my Friday. Usually for us from 1800-0000 or sometimes 0200 its pretty steady and you've got no problems. After that it gets rough. Read books, play cards with your coworkers if you're allowed to. I get 2 twenty minute breaks in the morning and I take the time to get up and walk around and that has done far more than caffeine ever did for me.

If I was stuck in the jail, this is what I would recommend. Get one of the pull up bar things from Walmart and go to town. The first time  you have to fight a prisoner, you will be thankful you have been working out.

I preferred a portable dvd player and the local Redbox kiosk.

It depends on what you are allowed to do and what you can get away with.

I work 10hour shifts at night -- so tons of internet time and music
Power naps -- if you have a good buddy to watch your back.
walk around and do arm/leg/core stretchs
some guys watch DVDs on personal laptops

I heard FAMs do squats in the airplane bathroom

This helps too

I work 9p-7a.  I'm a street officer though, so driving around keeps me awake.  Netflix is nice during those quiet nights.

I recommend staying away from Monster or other serious sugar type drinks.  I recently gave up coke.
If your jail/station has a weight room, push some of those around for a while.

When I first started, we were on 8 hr days. I worked 2000-0400 and it was awesome. Then our Union voted for and got 12 hr. shifts approved. I worked 1900-0700 for the first couple of years, now I am on 1500-0300. Hopefully, on to a better shift like 0900-2100 or 1100-2300 in a couple of years.  The advantage to our 12 hr. shifts is that we are guaranteed every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. Back when we were on 8 hr. shifts, you were lucky to see a weekend off every month and a half to two months. It doesn't totally suck, there are some 8 hr. short shifts sprinkled in (2-4 a month) to maintain the same amount of hours per pay period. I will say that Summers are busy and time flies, however, Winters are slow and grueling. I can't speak for a jail setting, but on the road we pass the time with traffic stops, walk-throughs of apartment buildings, pulling doors on businesses, etc. Oh, and I don't drink coffee, either...

You will discover the food group known as "ines."

Caffeine, and Nicotine.

Chemically aided consciousness.

A 60:40 blend of Copenhagen:Coffee grounds in your lip will do the trick.

7p-7a in the house. As stated, caffeine, and get up and clock your rounds. Depending on the house rules for the internet, find something to read, listen to some internet radio. Don't be a napper. Our nappers have reputations, and none of them are good.

It's going to be rough... I never had a big problem in patrol bc you could get great arrests but in the jail... Get your degree

Im a 7 to 7 deputy in our jail on nights.  Sucks hard is the only thing to describe it.  When I work the slower housing units, I bring in my perfect pushup deals and the second my eye lids start falling I start cranking out pushups.  Movies, chew, books, internets, etc. all work pretty good too.  Or, listen to phone calls, video visits, mail, etc for NCO's.  Investigate shit to find shit

You either love nights or hate them.  I loved them.
Not a coffee drinker or a tobacco user, but a few tactically applied Mt. Dew's always kept me going.  I also spaced out my snacking to keep the engine running.  A big meal in the wee hours of the morning would kill me.
In a jail setting it could be tough.  Look at what those with bad reputations do and AVOID IT.  If that means no youtube or clash of clans, then so be it.  Find something else.  Read and study career oriented material (arfcom).  Check you state's POST website.  Many have online training.  Earn some free hours toward advanced certs.
