An off-duty Birmingham police officer was killed during a robbery attempt outside a restaurant near Legion Field on Monday night. A second person, possibly a worker at the restaurant, also was shot.
A police official identified the slain officer as Joseph Daniels, a North Precinct day-shift patrolman. He was killed outside Reno Chicken and Burgers, 541 Graymont Ave.
Police Chief Mike Coppage said an altercation occurred inside the restaurant, shots were exchanged and the officer chased the suspect.
Police were seeking a man they said is 6 feet, 6 inches tall, slim, with a light complexion and dreadlocks. He was wearing a gray and blue jacket, dark slacks and a ski mask. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Birmingham Police at 254-1764.
"It just goes to show you, officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Coppage said. "He risked his life to stop a crime."
Ofc. Daniels was in restaurant when suspect came in announcing a robbery. Daniels drew his Beretta 9mm, a gunfight ensued, and he then chased suspect outside. Daniels was shot 5 times (once in chest, four in head). Total of 31 rounds fired between officer and suspect.
