An Austin Police Officer was fatally shot at around 1:00 a.m. in north Austin on Friday during what is described as a routine disturbance call.

911 received a call about a disturbance involving a man who appeared to be intoxicated at the Walmart store located just north of the Parmer Lane and I-35 intersection. Upon the APD officer's arrival, he was immediately engaged by the suspect, according to APD. During the scuffle, the officer sustained a gunshot injury to the neck, but was able to radio in for help after he went down.

The suspect was restrained by two Walmart store employees until other officers arrived, according to Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo.

EMS and other APD officers on the scene attempted unsuccessfully to revive the officer. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The suspect, described as an Asian male adult, is in APD custody and has been transported from the scene.

Arcevedo spoke about the incident and said that the Walmart store did a good job in responding, and that the Austin Police Department will stand by the fallen officer's family. The officer had been with the police department for about three years. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters. His name is not being released at this time.

Interesting how the media is handling this, They actually seem contrite.  There was a bad guy killed by ANOTHER officer not 6 hours previously and that has been barely mentioned at all.

Just as an aside, the shooter was from Colorado, been in Austin about a year, computer programmer for HP, used a .380.

He also was a Xanax addict and it appears he went to the Walmart to rob the pharmacy according to the roommate.
