Just got transferred to day shift in a S. Florida agency after working all nights. Man is it hot. With the humiidity and heat you literally sweat standing still in the shade. And once you get heated up after spending 10 minutes in the sun on a call, it is very difficult to cool down for the rest of the day. It helps if you can run to the office or a fire station and strip down for a while in the air conditioning and put on a fresh t shirt. The polyester uniforms and body armor do not help. Why don't most departments go to a summer uniform? Thanks for letting me vent.

I feel your pain..

We've been getting 100+ daily temps here in Texas for over a month now.
I work the 1400/2200 shift. It's like stepping into hell's furnace when I stick my head out of the house to come to work.
Fortunately, our Crown Vics have a good A/C.
It's a good justification for the external body armor. (I wish we had it)
It would be nice to be able to peel it off and cool down.

Same here in So TX. We have the external vests so thats a plus. Working the 12-10p shift. It's hot when you come to work and hot when you leave.

I actually have one for a Crown Vic that I can't use since they just gave me an Impala.

I'm in Orlando. Been terrible. I work 0600-1800 and I'm drenched with sweat for pretty much entire shift. I go to nights in about 2 weeks....can't wait! Oh and your right about being the gopher on days...sucks.

I know exaclty what you mean; sitting in the sun on a call in FL is no small feat; the poly uniforms we wear, plus body armor just cooks you up from the inside out.

Crank up the A/C on your unit and stick the hose on your body (if you have one) is about the only thing you can do; Can't wait for autum to come in...

Florida is the original "we've always done it this way" place. Uniforms are no exception.

A friend of mine works for a smaller SO and said that used to, they would wear longsleeves and ties year round.

It was that way in our agency maybe 40 years ago. I recall some of the old guys when I started talking about those sorts of uniform issues.

Ditto. Had one when I had a patrol car, everyone made fun of it at first until they were on a scene and needed some cool air. Now almost everyone has one on my shift.

SWFL day shift here.... only thing I hate more than being out in the heat is being out in the heat with a pair of latex gloves on and trying to dust for prints while sweating to death.

Wondering if external armor would be any cooler than concealable... not that my agency has any plans to switch anyway.

Fortunately, the only time I ever had to work days (other than an overtime shift here and there) was for 1 1/2 months in the fall. Wasn't bad. I did 2 years on the yard, 2 years on swings until I got fed up with the heat and went back to graves

I wear a external vest. They are a lot cooler than a internal vest.

They are still hot, but the heat vents out of it as opposed to being trapped like a internal vest does.

The comfort level is a lot better.

I wear mine with the regular uniform and the 5.11 style BDU's we can wear for patrol.

Mine is Point Blank in black and I just ordered the Molle style in navy blue to wear with my navy blue uniforms & BDU's.

Night shift is better but I was still sweating my a$$ off at 0300 standing out at a crash scene.
