my dept uses paca i've been wearing a level II for about 4 years years now. i have no complaints. i dont think its as thin as some of the others, the new one may be thinner im due a new one we'll see.

I’ve never used this specific vest so I can’t give you any first hand experiences.
I do notice on PACA’s web site that this vest has an areal density of .93 lbs/psf. That is lighter than many (probably most) other IIIA vests of other materials. However, personally I would prefer to avoid any vest with Spectra Shield or Spectra Fabric in it since these materials don’t appear to handle high velocity rounds too well. (Keep in mind that some IIIA vests will defeat rounds that other IIIA vests of different materials won’t defeat.) If I were buying a vest right now, my first choice would be one made of Zylon (preferably from Second Chance). However, they are right expensive! |

First let me say thanks for the responses!
I know scrimping on safety isn't the thing to do but since something is better then nothing I am trying to make the best descision while working with the available funds. The web site states that this style vest meets the older NIJ 101.03 which means that it hasn't been re-tested since the newer NIJ 101.04 standard has come into affect. I am not sure how much of a concern that should be. The weight only seems slightly higher then some others I have seen in the IIIA so that doesn't seem to bad either. I know some IIIA's are not the same as others, but since I can pick up this vest (which is in new condition) for $410 it seems to be a good compromise into the world of body armor, especially seeing the prices of the Second Chance stuff. |
