Sorry guys, it's true.  You need a pistol permit for pistols and military style assault weapons.  It's been a requirement for several years at least.

But a post ban isn't a military style assault weapon as far as the law is concerned, is it not?

After reading through the gobbledee goop, this looks like it  has to do with purchasing a handgun or military style semi-automatic rifle.  Correct me if I am wrong here.  The law applies to the transferee....That would be the purchaser.

The link must have been edited after I replied the first time.  Anyhow, reading the text of the law leads me to believe this section has to do with transfers of handguns and Military type assault weapons.  What about current owners?  Also, I shoot at a minnesota gun club, but do not live in min.  How do you think this would affect me, if at all?

There are no Minnesota laws requiring firearms permits for ownership or possession, either by residents or non residents.

You [b]MUST[/b] have a handgun purchase permit or permit to carry to buy or otherwise transfer ownership of handguns or military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.  Minnesota state law has it's own definition of what a "military-style semiautomatic assault weapon" is, and it doesn't have anything to do with the federal definition of such weapons.

Minnesota state law makes no distinction between an AR15 made in 1964, or one made in 2002, nor does it in anyway restrict the configuration of such weapons.

State statute 624.712 seems pretty clear on the subject.

And this is just yet another reason why I don't live in the socialist republic of minnesota.

Please point out to me the location in the text where the military style assault weapon is defined.  I could not find it in the above subsection nor could I find a reference to it.
