So you buy an 80% frame and build it yourself for yourself, never sell, yadda yadda. Do you have to put a serial number on it?

Well in the first place you can't sell it or transfer it to begin with.  You can do what ever you want when it comes to serials on these home grown weapons.  So nope serials are not required, I don’t even think you need to register them either.

You CAN sell it.  You just can't make it with the intent of selling it.  You can, however, change your mind later.  Until you do sell it, no markings are required.  ATF has suggested to others that it have marking sufficient to identify it in case it's stolen.  If you do sell it, then it needs some kind of ID and a unique serial number.

The ATF "strongly suggests" that you mark your 80% firearms in such a manner that they could be identified and returned to you should they be stolen.

"Returned" to you so it can be positively ID'd before it's cut to pieces with a torch.
