I'm going to be going on a trip to see some friends in Connecticut in early 2006. I'll be starting in SC then (I'm in NC now), so My route is SC->NC->VA->WV->PA->NY->CT.

I'm going to be taking a rifle or two with me, my AK and, if it's out and I manage to afford one, an FS2000.

How can I do this legally? Obviously, I'd put them in a hard, locking case, no mag, in the back or trunk (I might be going in a Jeep Wrangler, which doesn't have a trunk.). Is that enough?

Would taking ammunition be a bad idea?

Would it just be easier to fedex them to CT? Is THAT legal?

Are there restrictions in these particular states that would make it harder than going through other states, when possible?

Under Federal law you can legally ship your firearms interstate to yourself addressed to you in care of another person for any legal purpose. Handguns must be shipped via a common carrier and long guns can be shipped either by common carrier or USPS.  I would suggest that if you decide to ship your firearms that they be sent FedEx air.  

As long as you are not transporting handguns through NYS you should not have any problems as long as you are in compliance with USC § 926. Be aware that this does not guarantee you won't be arrested or have your firearms confiscated.  


TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > § 926A

§ 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

It looks like Fedexing them is the better option, then.

CONGRATS, you will run smack into CT's assault "scary looking weapon:" ban . Be careful , the state police up there can't even make up their mind about what is banned.

Better check CT laws, but I don't think that non-residents can possess or transport handguns at all without a CT CCW license. Go to www.packing.org and find the state law links for clarification.

FOPA does NOT cover you if the possession of the guns is not legal at your endpoint destination (CT) so be very careful!

So, that ends that. Maybe take a trip to Vermont to shoot? I know they're fairly right-headed on things of this nature.
