"Check with your local laws first".  I have.  Nobody knows shit.  I have been wanting to purchase an AR for quite some time and am getting frustrated.  I have asked many police officers and sheriff dept officers.  Some don't even know what an AR 15 is! I live in Iowa.  Should I talk to a lawyer about this?  If nobody knows the laws then what is stopping me from "breaking" it (the law).  Who would prosecute me?  I bet they would have some answers for me.

Did you check with any gun shops?  Their livelyhood relys on "keeping legal".  Also the NRA website has a section on individual states gun laws.  Your local LE is the last place I would check with, most LE's are worried about real crime than to be concerned about wether a legal rifle has an illegal bayonet mount or flash suppressor.
