Ammo for self-defense is best chosen as the ammo that your local police agency uses.  Why is this?

Some of the ex-perp's relatives might sue you.  When they sue you, they scream murder because you used ammo that killed a "poor defenseless man whose only crime was mistaking your home for his home" (gag!).

1.  A Black Talon, the "evil cop killer bullet designed for needless trauma".
2.  The manufacturer designed a load that was too heavy.
3.  The manufacturer designed a load that was too light.
4.  You handloaded your ammo specifically to go and murder a defenseless young man.

All of these problems are resolved if you choose loads that you have a "reasonable" explanation for using.

Examples of good reasons:
1.  Local PD uses it.
2.  Local Sheriff uses it.
3.  State police use it.
4.  XYZ, ABC, and DEF departments in this locale use it (as well).

Beyond this, you may wish to consult your local state regulations for the appropriate ammo.  For instance, in Kalifornia, we are not allowed flechette rounds.  Using one of these, or something similar in style in a hand load (like sewing needles, push pins, etc), will wind up allowing you to make friends with some strange people.

(Of course, the strangest will always be your new roommate, who is 6'4" tall, 350 pounds, and constantly calls you Shirley even though your name is Ralph!)

Oh, and I almost forgot!!!  The class I went to ages ago said to keep the box the ammo came in.  There is always a lot number, etc.

Your attorney will LOVE you if you prepared this way.  The more homework you do, the better.
