What happens to all that paperwork when the dealer closes?

The paperwork is sent to the BATF.

And they keep it forever and ever, and ever? They must have a big storage area.

Supposedly, they only keep it so long...

When our store started selling inventory off quickly, the ATF showed up and asked a lot of questions, the gist of which was "are you going out of business? Do you still need any of your 4473's from the last year and all years previous?  Can we take them all NOW?"

Needless to say, they take it pretty serious, fortunately I paid cash to customers who brought a gun in, which I was interested.  I never had to fill out more than one, which was for my brother's Christmas gift and it was only a .22 Ruger.  It always helped to have $500 in pocket everyday at work!  ($300 Weatherby Mark X, $350 Ruger 1 with Leupold 3.5-10, $400 PSS w/Leupold 4.5-14....) ahhhhhh the memories and good deals!  Oh yeah, can't forget the guy who sold his AR15 to the store, but we wouldn't pay for his mags, so I relieved 28 of them (20 Round Colt) for $20!

What were we talking about again?
