Hope LARRYG gets back with us, looks like Jimmie Johnson crashed the #99 just up the track from his corner, today in practice.  Just read it over on Speed.

Would like to hear how big it was

We have a short break and yes he did.  I am in my truck on the corner.  Did they say that he said a GT car got in his way?  That's what he told the ambulance crew.

I am not gonna say anything about that except to say that he had no help crashing.  The rear section of the 99 is pretty torn up and they did not get out for the qualifying session we just had.  Tore up the guard rail pretty good, broke some of our equipment and sent two corner workers diving for cover.  It happened about 10 feet past where I was.  Big crash!

Only got a few pics today and will try to post them tonight.  No off sessions as we don't have a full crew yet.

They just gave the 5 minute warning for the next group.  2 qualifying sessions for the Continental Tire Challenge cars and then night practice.

Course check.  Gotta go!

Another short break before night practice starts at 1830 lasting until 2030.

Earlier, during lunch, they rebuilt the guard rail where the 99 car hit this morning.  I guess they weren't happy with what they did because they are now out here again doing more repair.  They have removed some of the new material they put in earlier and are replacing that.

SPEED has been running their cameras during some the of Rolex activities, but I don't think they got the 99 crash.

We just had sunset and are all relaxing.  Several of us are going to Outback at the end of the day.

I will post some pictures later this evening once I get back to the hotel.

Thanks Larry, After I read that on speed, I thought, bet LarryG was right there!  Said on speeds website, they were using Jimmie Johnsons private jet to fly a rear frame section to the track tonight, and have it on the car, for the race.

Speed has some video of one of the RX-8's running, cool sound from the rotary engine

RX-8 Daytona

Infield looks funny down there with no one watching yet

Can't wait for pics!!

Oh, speed says he run into a GT car he didn't see

I guess it was some invisible GT car because, after I heard that he said that, I queried everyone on the corner and no one else saw it either.

Not taking up for him, just quoting the speed site.  So what if he fucked up, if he did, grow some balls and admit it

From the Continental Tire series, these two cars remind me of the Trans Am days when George Follmer in his Mustang and Mark Donohue in his Camaro were duking it out.  These two cars share the same paint scheme and numbers as those two:

Night practice for the Rolex cars.  Keep in mind that this was with no flash, as my flash unit is not strong enough, and in a hurry as I got very few chances to shoot any pictures:

99 is back out this morning in the first practice session.

The Continental Tire cars are out right now.  I finally have an off session, took some pictures, then realized I left the upload cable back at the hotel.  Damn, was gonna post them while the session is going on, which it is right now.

Final qualifying for the Rolex cars is next.  We will see how the 99 does.  Lunch after that with one last Rolex series practice for both classes, then the Continental Tire challenge at 1345 for 3 hours.  This particular bunch can get exciting, especially given that they are racing on street legal, albeit race compound, tires.

Then our social event at the end of the day with pizza and beer.

Will take some more pictures during the day and post them tonight.

If you get a vehicle pass, you need to paint a large bolt face logo that covers the entire top of your Fleet top.  Or, you could paint it onto a white bedsheet and drape that over your Fleet top and tie it down with bungees (redneck style). I guarantee the cameras will pick that up if you're parked in the right spot.  That would be awesome!

LarryG,

I've been meaning to ask this for a while now;
Did you ever have a Red RX8?
Shoot Tuesday night IPSC matches at Shooters in Gwinnett?
If so I know you from the IPSC days at Shooters & other local matches.

And BTW keep the pix coming.  I've been to the 24 a couple of times & other races their in DB.  I use to live there back in the 80's~good times.

Check into the WERA race schedule.
Back in the mid 80's they would run 6hr road races at Road Atlanta.  I don't know about any where else though.

Negative on the RX8.  My 1988 Anniversary Edition Turbo II looks better than an RX8 and will outrun them.

No on the rest.

Some shots from the corner station:

Relaxing between sessions:

Next session about to begin, shift captain giving instructions:

Couple of shots of where JJ hit the guard rail.  All that dirt was missing where the guard rail had given and sent a bunch of dirt flying.  The track crew replaced the posts and a section of guard rail and filled in the dirt.  See the curved skid mark?  That was JJ's car sliding after the crash.  The straight ones are from another car during another incident.

Our fire truck and ambulance:

Some general shots of the corner.  You can see slide marks where various cars have had some rides:

During final qualifying today, this GTO lost it in the high speed kink, Turn 4, went off to driver's right and slid for a long way in the grass.  Now, if they slide far enough, they will cross the track again where Turn 5 makes a 90 degree right turn.  This guy slid that far, but fortunately there was just enough gap for him to slide across without hitting anyone:

I don't know if Lou is here or not as we don't get much time to go over and mingle before the race, but these are the 2 Corvettes in the 24:

Some shots from the morning practice:

The 99 car made it out for the morning practice, but was a no-show for the final qualifying.  I guess they figure they will just start at the end of the DP field and work their way forward.  After all, it's a 24 hour race.

Notice the flaming exhaust in the next two pictures:

Oops!

You heard it here first.  This car will blow his engine before the race reaches halfway.  They have had nothing but problems all week long:

The ones with the black windshield strips are GS and the ones with white windshield strips are ST:

Omigod, a Miata was on the pole up against Beemers, a Porche Boxter, and others.

Yer goin the wrong way, dummy.

This happened on the last lap!  The 99 car was top 5 in ST and the 52 was top 10 in GS.
