Well, after reading that long ass thread about the Glock vs. the 1911, I have to say I was sold on the Glock by it's owners on this board.  I took my POS S&W 4053 to the show on Saturday and sold it to another individual exercising the "Gun Show Loophole," and applied the proceedes to a brand new Glock 22.

I was really up in the air if I should go Glock 23 or 22.  The 23 was very easily concealed, but the 22 hid just fine, so I took that one.  It is amazing how well it fits in the hand compared to the POS S&W.

On the last thread someone posted that the .40 had superior ballistics to the .45  I disagree with this, while it might be true with the slow 230gr bullet, it does not fly for the 180+P or 165+P loads.  Check the velocities and foot pounds on Cor-Bon loads:

.40   135 JHP 1325fps 526ft/lbs
.40   150 JHP 1200fps 480ft/lbs
.40   165 JHP 1150fps 485ft/lbs

.45+P 165 JHP 1250fps 573ft/lbs
.45+P 185 JHP 1150fps 543ft/lbs
.45+P 200 JHP 1050fps 490ft/lbs

AND the .45 will make a much bigger hole.  Clearly, the .45 with a lighter bullet kicks the crap out of the .40

But, in my case, I don't think anyone is walking away from my .40 Cor-Bon 150grainer, and the .45 is just a bit too large to conceal if I got the full frame.

The Glock is a good choice. Kimber is having QC problems as of late. I was going to buy one last month, but after hearing all the bad stuff on 1911forum, I decided to wait. But there's a Gold Match with my name on it.

Made my choice a few years ago. For accuracy, dependability, knock-down power, and all-round performance, it's gotta be a 1911. I've got plastic, but it stays in my wallet. I like the feel of American steel. One shot, done.

There are still a few things to account for though when comparing the two calibers.

1 - IMHO the .40 loads above are more controlable than the .45's listed.
2 - You'll carry more rds. than the .45 if using hi-caps.
3 - the .40 is a smaller more concealable firearm in most cases.
4 - .40 ammo is genrally cheaper than .45.
5 - In several studies I've seen the .40 has in most cases expanded either equal to or greater than the .45.
6 - .40 ammo is lighter than .45 and therefore I can eiher carry more or carry an equivalent amount comfortably.

I buy milsurp 45 ball ammo for 10 cents a round or less.
Now my carry ammo is Black Talon...but for training I buy cheap and shoot more.
Actually, I carry ball ammo in my backup mag in case the nasties try to hide behind light cover.

Milsurp is the way to go for training ammo...which is why I like to buy weapons in milsurp calibers.  I'll get a 40 in 10-20 years when there's some surplus ammo around ;P

ticondaroga, what you need to do now, is get ahold of a decent 1911, get it "tuned up" and enjoy a really smooth decent running autoloading pistol! make sure you get a good one to start with, and expect a few problems up front. why do you think they are so heavily sold/copied etc.? there are a lot of real good used ones available,look around. you won`t be sorry!!....B&G./...[pistol]

I wouldn't down the Glock(especially .45), to many people like them.  As for me I will stick with my 1998 vintage Kimber Stainless Compact .45 condition one (cocked and locked)with 165 grain Corbons in a Fist IWB Holster hidden by a safari vest for potent easy access concealed carry .

deal is with the glocks, IF you like them, they are a good handgun. i spent a lot of time with the ex`s "duty" weapon to know that i probably would not "mind" carrying it if the "dept" said i had to do so. to be perfectly honest, however, if i had my choice, it would be the delta elite 10...OR, 45, either 1911..or..sig!!!!!....BUT,...i am not, LEO.....[grenade]

I'll be the first to admit the Glock is an easy gun for a novice to learn.  However being a former Hicap fan carrying a Beretta M92, a Taurus 99 and later a Glock 22 I then purchased a Springfield Armory M1911 (1992) Did the basic mods (new sites, beavertail safety) and started to shoot it alot.  I only bought it because the club I belonged to had mostly 1911 shooters and they were good (better than I'll ever be)  To make a long story short the Beretta, Taurus and Glock are all gone.  The Springfield will NEVER go.  It may be complimented by a Baer premier2 or something but there will always be a 1911 in my home.  Do yourself a favor buy a good quality 1911 and shoot your glock side by side for awhile, see which one becomes your baby.  Maybe the Glock...maybe not... I've shot the 1911 many times.  But I'd have to say, the Glock 22 was probably the most fun I've ever had shooting a handgun.

I always smile when I read someone post to get a 1911 and "tune it up."  Funny, right out of the box the Glock ran flawless and grouped like a custom weapon.

My Springfield Armory M1911 ran flawlessly out of the box!  It has been a super reliable pistol.  Modifications are made to personalize your pistol not make it work.  Pistols should always operate correctly in their stock form.  An M1911 will generally need to be broken in with a couple of hundred rounds (although mine did not have teething problems) This is largely due to larger contact areas of the slide to frame rails.  I have shot well over 10-20,000 rounds through my pistol and cannot recall an instance where I had a malfunction that was not directly related to a bad round.  I sometimes get a bit quick on the old reloading press and...oops..  Anyhow regardless of the gun you shoot ENJOY it.  Have FUN and be SAFE.  Also if you havent already join a pro gun rights group such as GOA or NRA.
