I hope that we are able to get to the crash scene first, if there are survivors I would hate to see them in another 'russian" video.

Looks like we had a CH47 shot down, and according to the Pentagon, There are several fatalities.

It looks like the Taliban, have decided to stand up and fight, and I hope we kill every d**m one of them.

It is most unfortunate that we suffered these causalties. It has been said and bares repeating again, but many people outside of this board don't realize that air power alone can not do the job 100%, you need the trigger pullers. I think a lot of people has lulled into delusion this going to be something like the Gulf War, but that war was never completely finished.

It also seems most people don't realise how capable the Taliban are. They might not have the weapons we do, but they are backed into a corner.

We will beat them, but it may cost us lives.

Just ask a Russian how capable they are, I am sure the news shows are already jumping on a therory that it was brought down with an American stinger.

Who cares what the Russians think. We're a completely different animal and this is a completely different war.

But that being said, it was obvious from the very start that the Taliban would eventually re-group and attack when the heat was turned down a little bit. You don't have to be a tactical genius to know that.

The AP is reporting that everyone has been recovered from the crash site, but the extraction resulted in a big firefight.

In one incident, a Chinook helicopter was shot at and crashed. Seven died in the crash or ensuing fire fight on the ground, said a senior defense official on condition of anonymity.

What I want to know is what a  CH-47 'shithook' doing anywhere near the action ? Their a flying fuel/air bomb, and a large-ass target. I'm no genius but the smaller and more manuverable 'Blackhawk' was made for 'hot' insertions.

They were, flying in daylight which puts them and their 14 person crews at great risk.
A-10s however are making their first apperance in this conflict FINALLY according to Gen Franks. Still didn't stop them being shot down.

A la Blackhawk Down Franks said in his press confrence that he watched the rescue of the Chinook crew live via a ROV.

CNN is already agitating against the war calling the casualties "horiffic" and wondering why US troops were sent to a fortifed zone instead of bombing. They were so obvious in looking for a way to use casualties to attack the Bush Admin, they are getting really desperate. We need to get on them to fire the Judy Woodruff bitch, she was the worst.

It wasnt a CH-47D, it was a MH-47E, armed and armored and with self sealing tanks and IR jammers to defeat SAMS and 3 miniguns However it apeares to have been downed by either massed heavy MG fire or a RPG.

The altitude is ruining the MH-60's carrying capacity. It seems from the press conference that that is why they were using the more powerful MH-47's- which also have slightly more HP than the standard CH-47's- for this task.

Previously, during the bombing campaign, they were using the Air Force MH-53's for Spec Ops insertions for the same reason.

Yes, this is a tough area for helicoptors because of the altitude and cold weather.  India has the same problems operating in Kashmir, where the altitudes are even higher and the temps are lower.

As I understand it, they are mostly using the MH47s as opposed to Blackhawks because the 47s can be refueled in flight and can carry more men into battle.
