ABE (SW) Vinoya ... first Phillipino I ever met in my life. The poor little guy was trying to scream at 80 guys all bigger than he was shouting over the aircraft landing at Lindbergh Field in San Deigo and lost his voice for two weeks. All us poor Americans were trying to figure out what a "request shit" was for about four weeks ... until the division yeoman told us what a "chit" was in Navy parlance.

Yup. In fact, I encountered one of them about 10 years later. I was an E-1 when I went through basic training, but later became a JAG officer. I was doing legal assistance at the time, and he came by the office for something and ended up on my appointment roster. He had an impossible to pronounce last name, and when I went into the waiting room and called it, he looked up in shock. He said, "How'd you know how to pronounce my name?" I told him that he'd been my DS about a decade earlier. He told me he was glad that I'd turned out okay, other than being an officer and a lawyer.

Well, I enlisted in the Air Force in 1969 but had the "pleasure" of having two ex-marine drill sergeants who both were Vietnam vets. SSgt Medina and TSgt Villareal. Since both were San Antonio natives, they both enlisted in the Air Force after their marine combat tours in Vietnam. This allowed them to stay in the San Antonio area for many years while on active duty. So I "somewhat" got marine boot training. I remember one time there was this kid named Watson from Kentucky - a big chubby red headed kid, who would not march correctly. He bounced up and down on his toes with a big shit eating grin on his face. You remember the fat kid in Full Metal Jacket? Reminded me of him. Anyway, this kid marched right in front of me. One day SSgt Medina yelled at him twice to stop bouncing up and down. Watson just ignored him. The next thing I knew, SSgt Medina jumped up on one of my shoulders and the shoulder of the troop marching beside me, swung back his leg and kicked poor Watson so hard he went down for ten minutes. The formation had halted of course and SSgt Medina was yelling his ass off at the guy all the while he was on the ground crying like a baby. Gee, how lucky was I? These were probably the only two ex-marines in all of BMT, and I ended up doing basic with them. Needless to say, I kept my mouth shut and my shit wired tight all the way through basic. When I went through OTS some 11 years later, it was a joke after going through Vietnam-era enlisted basic. I know I am getting old remembering shit like this.........

SFC Kirkpatrick
SSG Kane(also from Kansas and I got shit the entire cycle because of it) Kirkpatrick was the quintessential Infantry DS. Dude had 3 combat jumps, Jumpmaster, Ranger, RI....dude was about as badass of a non-SOF soldier as you can find these days. He wanted to teach us things rather than just stand around and scream at us all day long. Guy was an excellent teacher and I'm not really sure why he never went SF....things that make you go "hmm." |
|
SSG Ray, SSG Ritter and SFC Munoz.
I also remember my recruiter....SSG Woods. I caught up with him in RoK, and we were the same rank....he was astonished, hahahaha!!!! He was a good guy, and didn't lay down too much bullshit, mainly, because, none of them even knew what my MOS was. |

Always a great way of ratting out those who claim to have been in.
SFC Baterna, SSG Clark and Withrow. There was a split tail from Puerto Rico but she wasn't around enough for me to remember. Plus she was ugly as sin. SFC Baterna was a BAD FUCKER from the Philippines. He was the reason I didn't get recycled after burning my hand. He gave me the stink eye during PT when the rest were doing push-ups so I started doing them one-armed . I was a Pop-Eye after 2 weeks and passed the PT Test. |
|
I am always reminded of my father's story about his DI's name.
His Sr. DI was 'Happy'. Oddly enough when Dad went through OCS year later guess who had also become an officer? That is right, and was Dad's company CO as well. 'Happy' again. |

Who could forget Drill Sgt. Prigmore and Drill Sgt. Speck.
