I saw a similar weapon on the discovery channel a couple of weeks back.  It was a show about modern weapons.  The gun used the same idea but was on a much larger scale.  It launched a huge spike at its target, and the test fire they showed did a lot of damage to the targets.  They plan to put em in tanks in the future... but it would take some HUGE generators to generate enough electricity to power those elecromagnets.

You saw the PM article on EMP guns, right? If they could harness that pulse, there's your electricity.

Seems kinda inefficient, though, shoot a gun to make electricity to fire a projectile.  Kinda circular.

It's not circular when you consider how much velocity is involved with an electromagnetic gun--think M1 Abrams 120mm sabot shell.  The final version is going to be a man-portable anti-armor weapon that doesn't use a shaped charge.  

It's like the little flecks of paint that orbit the earth going so fast that they can destroy a whole satellite.  

I always wanted a BB gun that could penetrate a tank!
