Israel’s new weapon
By Barbara Ferguson, Arab News Correspondent

WASHINGTON, 2 March — The Israeli Army is using a new psychological weapon against the Palestinians in the occupied territories — amplified sounds of war. The army is using amplification systems at night in Palestinian villages throughout the West Bank — they are playing high-volume, lifelike sounds of gunfire, explosions, and helicopter blades rotating.

The army’s objective, the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot reports, is to make the Palestinians think that military activity is under way in the area and thus terrify the residents. The army says they are using them to “prevent or delay planned terrorist attacks.” Army officers say the new measure allows them to “save” manpower and frees up the troops for operations duty in other locations. Israel used such psychological warfare in Lebanon with the object of deceiving the resistance, Yediot Ahronot reports. Israeli officials say they are also considering playing deafening noises as a means of dispersing demonstrations and riots without having to use physical force and manpower.

Hmmm, will the Palestinians counter this with sounds of amplified 'ululating'?

Heh, Heh, maybe they should try "These boots are made for walking", and sounds of rabbits being slaughtered....... I can imagine what happens when they get used to it, the bad guys start going outside, and the guy with the M92 a half mile away........well, you know!

Why don't they give a bunch of like units to the squatters, and then they can both save ammo and lives.

However, my guess is that there will be a unit stolen in about a week or so.

Since two can play the game, I'd actually expect fake bombings to have a similar effect.  Not instant, but time-delayed fireworks, flash-bangs, etc.  Lots of them.

Sure, and they could place life-size, cardboard cutouts of kids throwing rocks in the streets, in front of cutouts of the crouching riflemen and molotov cocktail throwers on the rooftops.

you guys are forgetting that the Israeli Army has always had a lot of shrinks and is fairly advanced in the area of military psychology.

These sounds, played nightly, do at least 2 things for the Israelis.  First, they are probably almost as effective as real operations in denying the locals sleep.  Less sleep means poorer judgment, poorer reaction time, more psychosis (including PTSD).

Second, they condition and desensitize the locals to these sounds.  When a real op goes off, it will take longer for the Palestinians to respond.

That's not bad for a couple of guys, a truck and a stereo.

Or picture Scott Helvenston standing at a border crossing with a bullhorn "youaint gotno hon-or---youaint gotno hon-or " over and over until the palestinians agree to surrender if they will "make it stop" ("psy-ops psy-ops psy-ops")
