I would say the Thompson, but it is one year too early and never made it overseas for WWI.

Mosin–Nagant, fought against itself many times and won everytime.

Quoted: EDIT /// The weapon has to be correct to the time period. Bergmann MP18 http://ncmuseumofhistory.org/images/prss_machinegun.gif Cartridge –– 9x19mm Parabellum Action –– open bolt blowback Rate of fire –– 500 round/min Muzzle velocity –– 380 m/s (1,247 ft/s) Feed system 32 detachable drum magazine Much weaker caliber than the BAR but I'd sacrifice that for more rounds. Plus it would be lighter and more maneuverable if I got to the other side and had to do some trench sweeping. Man portable? Lewis gun.... Otherwise, obviously, A TANK! (DUH!) Specifically, this one: The FT-17 is the first one to follow 'modern' design, but the FT-17 was a *light* tank... |

I'll take history lessons. The only reason you're charging a trench to kill your own race of people is because you are fools, just easily manipulated animals.

BAR, for Christ's sake !!! BAR or GTFO.
Who the fuck comes up with this shit? |

If you were a tank crewman in WWII you would be in the inferior Sherman. If you were in the Red Army your chances of surviving would probably be equally dismal whether you were in a tank or an infantryman on foot. |

1897 A weapon so badass the Germans tried to have it banned eta: Misread the question. I thought it was IN a trench. Charging a trench just basically sucks no matter what you have |

Oh believe me, I have no love lost for the M-4 'Crew-B-Que'.... However, I would much rather be in one of those, than facing an enemy that puts an MG-42 in every rifle squad, with an M1 Garand, and maybe a M1919 for support-by-fire if one was detached from weapons platoon, wearing nothing but a uniform shirt & some web gear... |

Just a pistol, because I want something light that isn't going to slow me down while I run like a track star. If by some miracle I make it to the other side I will be engaging multipule targets at close range.
WWI was a seriously fucked up war, modern weaponry used against classical tactics. |

BAR-It was over there
or Thompson-On the shipping dock the day the war ended so... |

Quoted: I'd want a new plan. Edit: Alright, can we charge the trenches at 120 MPH in a stolen Hun airplane? http://www.pilotfriend.com/photo_albums/images10/22.jpg Just remember to pull the pins on the grenades before you chuck them over the side... |

1897 Winchester with the bayonet mounted. Nothing like a 12ga with an extra 17" of blade at the end to let the other guy let you know that you want them dead.
And yes, its probably a good choice if the first users of chlorine and mustard gas tried to ban the weapon on the grounds of it being excessively savage. |

MP18 or handgun. If I had a shotgun, I'd rather sport a Model 12 Winchester than a M1897. But the older shotgun would still get the job done in a trench fight. |

just a knife, kill the first guy then rip the rest apart with my bare fucking hands.

Slightly off topic, but what rotten luck for Colonel Thompson! Designs a trench sweeper, coins the term "sub-machine gun", but the armistice comes. So instead of the public associating his weapon with brave doughboys, they think of Chicago gangsters, and he didn't live to see it's use in WWII.
