Retired Newark cop kills 4, police say
Authorities gather in a Toms River neighborhood to probe the shooting.
TOMS RIVER, New Jersey (CNN) -- A retired Newark police officer killed his 22-year-old granddaughter at a relative's home Thursday, then shot and killed three others in the same coastal New Jersey neighborhood, police said.
John Mabie, 70, a resident of the neighborhood who retired from the Newark police force in 1978, was apprehended at his home shortly after going on the shooting spree, authorities said.
He was charged with four counts of murder, and Superior Court Judge Peter Giovine set bail at $3 million.
The shootings began shortly after 1 p.m., after Mabie got into a dispute with his neighbors, according to a spokesman for the Dover Township Police Department.
Natalie Gingerelli, 22, was visiting a relative who lived across the street when Mabie, her grandfather, shot and killed her, police said.
Three other neighbors were killed at two other homes, according to police. The victims were identified as Sue Keiran, 42; Susanne Lavecchia, 27; and Lavecchia's fiance, Thomas Luyser, 27.
Three school buses in the area returned to school because of the shootings, and the children were personally escorted to their homes, authorities said.
Toms River is located about 50 miles south of New York City, on the New Jersey coast.
